backup

I have a short that has about 800 gigs of media. I need to free this space off my internal hard drive (the edit has been delayed until who knows when). should I just copy the media files from my hard drive to my external 1tb drive? will the project still work properly. I think it will just want to check. It was shot with an HVX200 and I don't have the original p2 card files for most of it, it was ingested by someone else and all I got was the avid media files for what they did.

Thanks,
Geoffrey

open the medial tool and consolidate your footage onto the new drive. It will take the same amount of time as just copying the files. This way you copy over just the files for this project.

yes, you can just drag all your stuff over the the firewire drive. Then when you want to pick the project back up, drag it back to your omfi folders on your system. As long as you use it just for backup it will be fine. It when you try to use it in a sessiohn that you are baggin' yourself.

I have never used the consolidate function and want to make sure I am correct. if I select all the media from a project using the media tool and consolidate it to my external drive, checking delete original media files when done, my project will still have all the media just in one place and I will be able to access all my media from my external. is this correct?

I am wanting to move all media not just the ones used in a sequence. This is a project that will eventually be returned to but as of now it is being put on the back burner, unfinished as far as editing.

It'll be easier for you just to move the folder. I moved 2 terabytes last week from unity to unity, drag and drop will work just fine.

consolidate only moves the files in your time line. If you have other files that you didn't use yet they will not be moved. Drag everything in your mxf folder into the external but also remember to drag your project folder along so you have a back up copy.
