Does anyone know if the backup recording feature on the DVX100A will record onto a Digital 8 camera in 24P mode? Is there going to be some difference compared to when it is captured on the DVX? I haven't gotten another camera to test this out yet. Thanks
Not having tried it, I know it works on paper. Digital 8 is digital, so the picture will be the same quality, the issue becomes the strength of the tape itself: Hi8 tapes aren't as strong as MiniDV. But for a back-up they should do the job.
24P modes will work because they're being relayed to tape in 60i anyways.
What's this back-up mode though? I haven't heard of it...
It is on page 62 in your manual for the DVX. It allows you to use firewire to connect the other camera up and set it up inside the DVX to control the other camera. It seems to be a pretty cool feature.
..the other recording device must be a DV device.. the digital 8 camera will not recognize a DV stream.. so the answer is : no it cannot be done.
unless you want to dub it via an analog composite or s video connection. which is a big loss in quality, and pretty useless for 24p editing as it wuld have no timecode concurrent with theoriginal digital data.
Actually Digital8 is a firewire/dv compatible format. It is for all intents and purposes a DV camera, but it doesn't use miniDV tape, it uses 8mm or Hi8 videotape.
Yeah, it was another attempt by Sony to create a proprietary format. They saw the rampant success of DV, and they had all these 8mm camcorder engines already built, and they thought... hey, why not record DV on an 8mm tape? We could call it "Digital8", and we'll make cruddy cameras that we can sell really cheap, and we'll be the only manufacturer, and everyone will ditch DV and move over to us!
Flop.
The one nice thing Digital8 does is it does an on-the-fly transcode from 8mm or Hi8 to DV, so you can put an analog 8mm tape or hi8 tape in the camera, hit "play", and it'll stream a DV-compatible signal out the firewire.
The only problem I found with digital-8 cameras is that when you copy from one tape to the other, it doesn't retain the time-code, which is a pain in the arse. It just records it in continuous time code.
Apart from that, you should, in theory, keep all the quality.

No, the external device control doesn't really have anything specifically to do with hard disks. It was designed to control external tape decks. It only works with hard disks if they understand firewire transport signals (like the nNovia QuickCapture).
