Backing Up!!!

Just attempted backup of a MiniDV tape - footage shot on 24p ADV - by connecting Panasonic AG-DVX100A (24p ADV) with Panasonic EZ50 (regular NTSC, 29.97 fps). Did it both ways: playing through the DVX100 and recording on the EZ50 and viceversa. In both cases, when I click on clip format in Final Cut, it says that the video rate is 29.97 although had been capturing with advanced pulldown removal and original footage is indeed 23.98 fps. How should I go about backing up, making sure the two tapes end up with 23.98 fps. when I only have one DVX100? Unsure on what settings to put - maybe has to do with timecode on recording setup menu?

Re: Backing Up!!!

Excellent question!!! I have a slightly similar situation...

I have a tape shot in DVX100A at 24PA. I captured to my computer using a Sony TRV900 and FCP settings specifying 24P editing and 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal... guess what!?! FCP says the footage is 29.97 and brings it to the sequence with the top red bar that implies you have to render... Whatha'F?

Re: Backing Up!!!

Maybe I'm not understanding your question but the DVX captures at 23.976fps but adds it's own pulldown before it goes to tape making the recorded footage 29.97. This means that you can play it on any machine capable of playing mini dv and not affect the footage in any way. If you simply want to make a backup from your camera to another unit, it will copy it exactly.

I capture my footage using a regular consumer Canon camera and Premiere still recognizes it correctly as 24pa footage.

Maybe your settings aren't correct in FCP. I'm not a Mac user so I can't speak to that issue.

Re: Backing Up!!!

Nope, just checked, settings are:

Sequence = 24P
Capture = 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal 24P

I never change the settings. I always capture with the DVX and never had a problem. The clips end up 24P in FCP. This time I used my TRV to avoid putting hours on my DVX's heads. It ended up as 29.97 clips. I am going to capture againg with my DVX, same tapes, same settings to see what happens... This sucks since I see no reason why is doing this. The data in on the tape as 29.97 with pulldown, it should not matter the cam you use to capture as long it is NTSC DV!
