Backing up footage from af100 in the field

Lexar has 128GB SDHC cards at B&H for $229 each....if you record to both cards at once that'll give you ~12 hours of recording time + an instant backup on the second card.

...except that right now it's not possible to record to both cards simultaneously (something most if not all here would love to see); what you're describing can only be done with an external recorder.

Really?! I honestly didn't know that...that's.....odd for a camera in that price range and with 2 card slots. For lack of a better term, that really sucks...

Then again... What other Panasonic camera can record to 2 cards at once? None that I know...

The AC130 apparently will, so I question the whole "it's not a needed feature" argument. I also question the explanation behind the lack of this feature in the AF100. I mean, the internal wiring is already there so it just seems like a minor firmware update.

It seems like a simple programming update:

If Setting=Relay then send data to SD1.
If SD1=Full then send data to SD2.

Else If Setting=Backup then send data to SD1 and SD2.

----

I question the difficulty of doing this. Sounds like there may be a new version of the AF100 next year (AF200?) and Panasonic doesn't want to add any new features to the AF100, regardless how easy it would be to do so. Kind of a shame, really.

I was going to ask... "How are you recording to both cards?"...
Does anyone know if there is a way to play content from one card slot to the other after recording?

I'm trying the card copy now. It looked like it was going smooth until it reached 95%. Now it's just stopped at 95 with the card LEDs flashing. Not sure if I should wait longer or Cancel. Has anyone else seen this?

I was wondering about this very question recently and have a question.

Would it be viable to just have (4) 32gb SD cards, and in the event that I run out of space, just back them up to TWO cheaper HD's?

Then, when I get back to base I can store somewhere else? But, what's the best option for long-term storage once I reach my home. Im on using a mid 2010 macbook pro 15", so I don't have an express card slot, meaning I am only able to use firewire 800 (which shouldn't matter, besides for editing off of it), but what's the best LONG term storage?

Thanks for any responses.

Erik, I'm a lens whore, not an SD card whore.
At least not yet anyway.
Although I have started to buy SDXC cards for some projects, and those suckers are still expensive.

By the way, San Diego is my home town and I certainly do miss it at times.
