backing data up on an external HD

Is there a specific way to back your information up on an external hard drive automatically? as opposed to saving it once on your internal then saving it again on an external.

thanks in advance,
tony

not really... you could set up all sorts of things but why... just figure out what you want in there and whenever you go our to get milk at the store down the street get it going

just make sure there is nothing else running in the background and you should be safe unless your system is highly unstable

right now my main concern is all of the invoices and my excel document that has all of my jobs on it. and '08 is about to start and i really wanted to be ready for this year. i was wanting to be able to save once and have it automatically save the same thing to my external.

thanks for the reply

not sure but it seems I'm missing something. Why can't you skip the step of saving to your internal?

It depends on what you are trying to save/do but when given the SAVE AS option, why can't you just use the drop down box to locate your external hard drive?

If you're running Leopard on a Mac, use Time Machine (comes with Leopard) and it backs up any drive you want on a hourly basis...automatically.

i guess that's one more reason to upgrade to leopard : )

that's basically what i'm wanting. instead of going to "save" to my internal (where it already is) then going "save as" to my external and replacing it because it is already there.

just trying to simplfy the process. it also kind of scares me to constantly be replacing the file on my external. even though i'm only replacing it with a slightly different version of itself.

btw, is there a way to do what leopard is doing? i know there is the "automator" program with tiger but i haven't messed with it too much and don't know much about it.

I'm not sure. The whole Time Machine happens in the background and I never notice it going on. I've got a 500GB drive for the Time Machine. It makes a full backup up the first time it runs, then after that just makes the iterational changes.
