Background plate

Re: Background plate

looks pretty nice so far. I look forward to seeing the completed version.

Re: Background plate

thats really cool, can you share what softare you use? Im trying to get into FX shots myself. And what do you mean by background plate? was the actor on a blue screen?

Re: Background plate

Thanks guys.
I mean background plate for 3D stuff. When she clicks her glasses its going to invoke a holographic tablet that she puts her hand on to initiate the transport to another scene. The next scene will have a wall that gets spread open by... something (i havnt figured out what im going to do for that) and she will walk out and initiate another holographic interface that you will see in an over the shoulder shot. I have to also get in the voice over of "The power of STAR TC in the palm of your hands".
Young-H._Lee...
I shot on the DVX100a in our basement, dumped the footage in premiere, took it into after effects to colorize and darken the background to get the pitch black. Then I took it back to premiere to add the sound design to get the feel. The sounds and music are really nice, the web compressed version doesnt do it any justice. Then I sat there staring at the screen for hours thinking what to do next..Then I took it back into After effects and created 3 layers with maskes for the subject and 3 layers of the background to match and to hide the boxes, fan, servers, shadows and my arm that got into the shot. Then i created a new comp(You have to create a new comp for that because you will see the edges when you shrink it down for the disappearing effect) with just the figure masked out and applied some streaming light effects and bloom.
Then I rendered it as a TIF sequence and imported it into Lightwave where im now creating the holographic stuff. I still need to create some effects when she starts to disappear but i havnt decided what i want to do plus time is limited on this. I shot the actress right in the scene and also shot just the scene so i could mask her out. The next scene is going to be hard because its a close up and getting the 3D to look like its in the scene takes time.
Ok. back to work for me...

Re: Background plate

Pretty amazing amount of work for about 20 seconds of airtime. Must be a labor of love.

Re: Background plate

Hey Opressor, thanks for that very informative response. It was kinda funny too :D

Anyways, I was impressed with the look you got, it looked like you shot it in the underground parking lot, like in Matrix Revolutions when the asian guy walks toward the two bouncers. I cant wait to see the holograms, do post more work!!

if its not too much trouble, could you show us a picture of the original footage of the basement? its pretty amazing that the new video you have after all that post came from an interior shot!

thanks man

Re: Background plate

NICE!! can u tell us what u used for lightining? :) thanx

Re: Background plate

I missed the part where she slides back at the end... went frame by frame to see what you did to get that flash and noticed her sliding back... is that intentional? Or was that something you had to do to get the transition back to the plate smooth?

Re: Background plate

I did that on purpose. I was thinking she gets pulled back into the darkness. I might do a little vortex thingy behind her if time allows. Im animating a holographic tablet thats in front of her and when she goes it turns into the real thing and drops to the floor. Getting the shadows and lighting to match is taking alot of time not to mention the dynamics i have to put in to make it look like it really fell and bounced around. ARG.... soooo much to do in so little time.
