Back up system workflow

I have two 500 GB Western Digital SATA drives that are filled up. My plan now is to burn the footage on DVD and empty out the drives.

I was thinking of investing in a Netgear drive but I do not think I really need it at this point. What do you all think?

If you go with Blu-Ray, it reduces the disc quantity substantially. A double layer disc holds 50gigs. There is debate about the reliability, just like drives, but it is an alternative.

I use this Thermaltake BlacX eSATA USB Docking Station. I move project media off my RAID and onto 500 and 1TB drives. Works for me. I put the bare drive in a WiebeTech DriveBox Anti-Static Drive Case and store them in a closet.

Is it more reliable than a SATA in your opinion?

I have those docking stations. How many SATA drives do you have now? Is there a point where you clean them out and reuse them? What is the shelf life?

I have around six drives. I cant tell you with any scientific proof how long the shelf life is but for now it frees up my raid for editing. burning disks is not practical for HD material since it takes several to back up 100gig projects that I have. If you have the money then a off site facility that has redundant servers is the safest way to go. I cant afford that so hard drives are the solution for now.

Who knows, we'll all find out in about ten years. I suppose from my point of view, they are both magnetic media, but a Blu-Ray has less to go wrong with no motor or electronics. This is certainly an open debate with no clear answer.
