GH5 Back up & edit GH5 footage on iPad Pro

I only need to do backups (from GH5 SD card to 2 USB drives) and then a simple stringout edit in the field. Love to ditch a 3lbs laptop for a 1lbs iPad.

Any one offer best practices for 1st backing up GH5 to USB drive via iPad pro with an adapter - which one is best?

Then can you edit from the USB drive using Lumafusion? Or do the files HAVE to live on the iPad?

Feel free to answer all the questions I should be asking!

I’m just a little bit further down the road than you on this question, still trying to figure some things out. FWIW- I have an iPad Pro 11.

I don’t have Lumafusion yet, but I understand that you can edit from an external drive with it.

The Hyperdrive hub is highly regarded, I picked one up last week after a significant price drop. So far so good. Copy times via drag and drop are slower than a laptop, but not by much. I copied some GH5 400mbp files for reference.

I tried to play the GH5 400mbp files, they wouldn’t play. There was a thumbnail to view however. When I tried an 8 bit file everything was groovy. This is a bummer if indeed true, I’d really like to be able to view and edit 400Mbp Gh5 files on my iPad Pro. I’m happy to be incorrect on this point.

The only time I use a laptop anymore is for client downloads in the field, and occasionally as a backup to my workstation. My goal is to use the iPad for this purpose in the future and leave the MBP in the office. One of my ongoing efforts is to lighten my load and the amount of gear I’m schlepping into the field.

I’m also looking for a downloading app that can verify file integrity etc. I use Hedge on my MBP and workstation , it appears that an iOS app for this purpose does not exist yet. A few months ago I chatted with the folks at Hedge, it sounded like they may be entertaining the idea of an iOS version of their app.

Hope this is helpful.

Fwiw, a follow up... Another thread mentioned how VLC was able to play 400 all-I files on macs when even Quick Time Player cannot. I downloaded VLC for iOS and voila... it plays the 400 all-I files on my iPad Pro. What a great utility program. Thank you VLC! The iPad Pro just got a whole lot more useful in the field.
