Back Focus problems.

Well, I own an HVX. But I have it in a companies rental house.

I took it out for a personal project this weekend, but then I had to fly to TN today with my camera for another project (which is being rented out by the rental house.)

Anyway, I was having issues with the camera over the weekend, and then it dawned on me. So, i checked the back focus and its WAY out of whack. I need to test it again...(been busy, packing/flying, and totally exhausted from this weekends project...)

Anyway...never dawned on me to check the backfocus before I left the rental house on the HVX because I have never heard of/had any small cameras having an issue. Just never been a problem with me.

Now, the rental house will take care of getting the camera serviced when I get back to LA. Im not worried about that. But has anyone else run into this problems?

Granted, since the camera rents out I have no clue who has had or what has been done to it, but I havent seen any signs of dropping or abuse.

Anyway, just posting to clear my mind more then anything. The time it spends in service is time its not getting booked to make me money :(

How did you determine it was out of whack? (I do understand back focus so no need to go into that.)

I zoomed in on an object. Focused the camera, and when I zoomed out it went soft.

I haven't had that problem, and this is the first I've heard of anyone with a backfocus issue.
Strange. (Especially since there is no backfocus adjustment on the HVX.)

well, sort of. Not back focus on the lense, but the camera's optics do move internally with zooms.......so yeah, this could be a real issue if the camera has been dropped or banged around.

Exactly.

The camera is most likely going to go in for service.

I do see a point on the bottom where the camera might have been dropped. I will show it to Abel when I get back in town, and I'm sure they will take care it.

Just sucks it had to happen to my camera, but that is also what happens when you put your gear in to rental. So, oh well. My current gig isn't so critical that I cant grab focus when i need it. Im pretty wide most of the time anyway.

Sarlacc,
Was it incredibly obvious?
The only reason i ask is that I have noticed sometimes depending on the resolution of the monitoring system that a wide shot will appear soft and that this will be worse at wide open f stops where I assume you made your test. (Of course if its the monitor the f stop shouldn't matter.
Have you compared to another HVX?
I would do that before sending it away and that would tell you for sure if something was wrong.
I have wondered why there aren't more baxck- focus problems with these little cameras.
In the old XL1 I saw the difference between 2 wide Zooms and it appeard to me to be a back-focus difference.

Let us know what turns up.
