B4 Lenses for FS700

Hi all.

Does anyone have any experiences using adapted B4 2/3 HD lenses with the FS700?

A lot of my work is done for the NFL in which a "tight on the spiral" shot is needed. Paired with the O7Q and continuous HFR, the FS700 can be an extremely useful tool for this - with a proper servo zoom lens that is.

Fujinon's 85-300mm Cabrio would be ideal if it wasn't over $40K. Anyone have any recommendations for adapted 2/3" lenses?

Joe, are you looking for types of lenses or actual broadcast lenses? There are a lot of 2/3" broadcast lenses. Do you want long zoom range? Extender? Price range?

To do this you will need an AbelCine IBE HDx35 mk.2 adapter. They come in PL mount but there is a mount adapter for it to change it into Sony-E mount to go on the FS700. Either way it definitely needs front rod support. Then you can use an HD 16x9 ENG zoom you want on the camera.

Mitch, thanks for the quick response. I've heard very good things about AbelCine's adapter. It does have a hefty price tag, but seems worth the buy if I want correct-looking images and DOF without vignetting, distortion, etc.

Bassman - It seems Canon and Fujinon have some options between the $5K - $7K range. A 2x extender is a great option to hit close to 350mm on the telephoto end. Also fast zoom speeds are a must in sports broadcasting.

If my memory is correct the Lens adapters will give you a stop loss of close to 2.5. Add to the the 2x extender and you maybe coming close to an unusable image. Just saying don't bank on the 2x that's on the lens working out for you...

You dont have to go with Abelcine model. MTF services also make a B4 to Nex adaptor at a much more reasonable price.
Anybody have or used one of these? Please speak up. Very little on the web about it.

Can you use something like the Canon EF 28-300mm f3.5-5.6L?

With an EF to Emount speedbooster, it will essentially be that lens, without a speedbooster, it will be a 42mm to 450mm.

That is unless you need the powered zoom part, then you can also pick up the Zacuto Control Grip & Z-Motor.

The MTF adapter requires the use of the 2/3" lens' 2x extender. Such extenders are designed to magnify the 2/3" image area, not expand the image area larger. As a result, many lenses used this way will exhibit significant degredation and distortion of the image in the outer portions of the frame. Chromatic abberations, loss of resolution and contrast are just a few of the major issues, yielding potentially unusable images.

The HDx35 does all the magnification itself and it is purpose built for this task. The optical quality is quite high and the adapter does not add any significant degradaion to the image.

Such magnification does cost about 2.5 stops of brightness with either system.

I just came across Zacuto's new Control Grip & Z-Motor available this fall. This would be a great alternative to still use Canon EF high-quality still glass meant for larger sensors. Curious about the zoom speed though. I also didn't see the FS700 listed under the supported camera list - but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Has anybody done a side by side comparison of the 2 units? I ask,as your information Mitch seems to completely conflict with what Alister says in the video. I'd love a review from people who werent involved with Abelcine or MTF.

Allister is a friend and I know he believes in only making the finest products he can. That said, I was party to a number of internal tests. I am no longer with AbelCine and realy have no horse in this race any longer. But I still stand behind what I said. It is of course dependent on the individual lens, but I can clearly see the difference.

I've used the Abel/IBE version II adapter on my C300 with the power cable to power my Fuji lenses(HA 13x4.5 and HA 22x7.8). It's a handy item to have if you need it. It opens up the use of glass that just doesn't exist for PL/large sensor cameras. There will be image degradation, but unless you're intercutting back and forth with cine/PL or high quality still lenses, most people won't notice. I tested my 22x7.8 with the 2x engaged and shooting outside during the day, I still had enough light at ISO 850. But if you were shooting a night game or inside under artificial light as well, you're gonna be cranking up the ISO. As far as the image w/2x engaged, it gets milky/soft wide open and at close focus distances. Stop down a little and it's fine.

*EDIT*
Maybe I'm painting the wrong picture by saying "there will be image degradation". I'm not trying to infer that the image will become crap. I'm saying that the image created by the lens being adapted to the given large sensor camera will not be as good as a quality lens designed for a large sensor camera.
