B4 ENg lens SD?

Hi Guys,

been liking the idea of a servo lens, eng style. I have also been shooting a bunch of real fast turn around stuff where a eng/af100 mix would work quite well, in theory.

So my question is ... would it be worth picking up an SD eng lens with a doubler and the b4 adapter to give it a shot? I dont really have any eng lenses easily available to me to try/rent and the HD ones are very costly. Im not so fussed about resolution as all this stuff gets 720 web delivery at best.

any thoughts?

Just been thinking about it the last week so still just ideas. I figured the SD lenses cant be that soft can they? Maybe they can :)

There's a thread a couple down about this. I bought a ciecio7 adaptor last week to try with a very old Fuji B4 SD lens and the results were awful, totally unusable. Beyond soft, and the edges with the doubler engaged were complete mush, almost like a defocussed vignette. I hope it was just a bad experience with my particular lens as it would be great to use as an ENG rig - but I fear only an HD lens would come close. I believe the problem is that when you engage the doubler, not only do you lose those 2 stops of light, you also greatly decrease the sharpness of the lens. Would be very happy to be proved wrong by someone else here though!

I had the same experience trying to adapt an old Canon 2/3" 13x9 lens with extender that I rescued off a surplus '80s vintage Ikegami HL79. The whole picture was soft and the corners were just useless. It seems there's a reason they charge real money for those HD lenses.

Yeah, really should have had a look first. Found a whole bunch of info once I searched :)
Not so enamored with it after hearing of the decidedly mixed results.

Does any one remember what happened to that guy who was making a hand grip with a servo in it?? The idea was to put a sip gear on your zoom lens like the 14-140 and the servo would control the zoom as well as give you a hand grip. It would attach to 15mm rods. looked like a cool idea, no idea about pricing.

I tried the non-optical mount with my Canon 17X HDXS lens when I first received my AF. Tried it once, thought it looked terrible...soft corners, etc. I did try the AbelCine Optical mount last year and it was very good. Only problem was cost, I ccouldn't justify it for that price of camera.
if you have the bucks, go optical, it makes a big difference.
