B12 Essay
An essay about life on a faraway planet.

Hi dvx users :)

Today is a very nice date to show you the newest episode of my project called "Satellite B12". I already showed you the other videos in this thread a view months ago.
"Essay" is the last of five episodes introducing the universe and setting the mood for my upcoming short. I hope you like it and I would be happy to get some feedback in order to get the best out of my short ;-)

Setting: The human race is soon to be extinct and the only way to preserve our heritage is to discover new planets. Yet it is still impossible to travel at light speed and no living being could ever arrive at the only place suitable for humans to survive and within reach for a spacecraft.
Therefore scientists send the human genome on its long journey to a small moon called "B12", where people are born and raised by machines. Yet life on B12 is not what they expected it to be ...

Let me know if you have any suggestions or questions. Since I'm from Switzerland there may be some language issues in the video and in this thread, so please help me to get rid of them :) Also it would be great to hear your opinion on the essay itself since I wrote it myself ;-)

Thanks for your time and have a nice 12-12-12

Here's the breakdown, if anyone's interested :)
This is my last video of the year and the end of my episodes. Now I'm gonna shoot some real shorts
Would be cool to get some comments on "B12: Essay" so I know what to improve ...

I have not watched your clips (am going to in a few) but as far as the story goes, I LOVE IT! It's a great concept, pretty original for the most part, and with the concept leaves many avenues to be discovered. ( or in your case "moons" lol:)

After I watch these clips I will revisit your thread and give an honest opinion. cheers:)

So I watched the film. First the technical: I'm not sure what you shot on, It looks as if the codec can't hold up to the grade, Maybe it was vimeo, but it looked a bit noisy in scenes and had a significant amount of macro blocking. I thought the blacks were a bit to crushed, any shadow detail is gone, and in the vid where you show before and after looks as if you shot with enough exposure to have more latitude in the final grade. Although grading is subjective.

I wasn't able to get the story out of the shots even with the narration, If I didn't read the synopsis I wouldn't have known what the story was about, also I didn't see any other episodes, so I imagine it would reveal more of the story than just watching the last episode. Overall, I think you did a good job, but there's room for improvement. Like the orbs would be casting light in the forest, and we would see light reflecting off the leaves. You could achieve that the same as if you were doing a muzzle flash from a gun. Just need to show the orb emitting light. Thats where the motivation for lighting that scene would be for me. Nowhere else.

I would like to see a better image overall, the degradation in image quality did pull me away from the story several times to where I had to move the slider back to re watch the shot. (avg movie goers wouldn't have this issue i think) sounded good and clean, full and thick. So I didn't have any issue there.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was going for.

Unfortunately I developed the story and the universe while creating the episodes so that's why you can't see much of it in the videos. The episodes are some sort of Teaser-Trailer for the real short and I created them during my time in Swiss Army. If you watch all theepisodes (which you can do HERE or on my website) it's possible to get the story, but it's not that easy, I have to admit that.
But I see the episodes as a training (I've never done SciFi before) in order to get a good short movie this year ;-)

I noticed that too. On my computer it looks a lot better, but the scenes are very hard to handle for vimeo and youtube. It looks just terrible on both websites, I have to admit that. The other problem besides the codec is my display. On my old display the scenes are a lot brighter and there's a lot of detail in the shadows. Now that I got a new one I can't see anything anymore ... I'm just a normal student, so my equipment (and of course my grading skills) still needs a lot of improvement ^^

Overall, I think you did a good job, but there's room for improvement.
Thanks, your comment helped me a lot. I hope to get these problems fixed in my short

Hope to get more helpful comments ;-)
