B/W documentary preset

Shoot your doc and worry about making a great documentary... forget spending any resources on making it "filmic". Shoot with a DVX.. in 24p.. boom more than enough "filmic" for a doc.

As an aside... get a good DP for your doc... and this takes care of itself.

Well, right an wrong the above post...
of course its about a good story and definitely you need a good DP, but i know the urge to have a good filmic look, also when you are making a documentary...!

Ill try to throw in some constructive points:
Its hard to say which settings are the "Right" ones, depending on the situation(a lot of run and shoot?), i would suggest to decide this on the topic and different situations to come, together with the DP.

One thing that is definitely easier for focus(you won't run with a Marshall for focusing..!) is to record in HD, 720PN gives you quite the same amount of minutes(i guess if you record 720PN 24 it will give you even more in NTSC-land) of minutes per GB as dvcpro 50, well the compression will be stronger, but the Focus assist helps you to find the right focus, which is difficult in most of the situations outside i know...so id definitely recommend to use 720PN and use the focus assist as much as possible.

On the other hand, cinelike d gives you probably the closest "cinema" look, but in documentary you have a high danger of blow outs, so you should consider a different setting here, best is to find out in a pre-test..!

My camera girl quite always uses cinelike-d, but you have to see how strong your hard works, and how skillful/crazy your DP is..!

Good luck, feel free to p.m. me for infos..

I want to make a documentary about colectionars,all kind of them.There isn't much run&gun action so I won't have a problem with focusing.I'm thrying to get that grainy black&white retro 8mm fell.I'm using HVX200.

so..go and do some tests, including the post, to see how you can match the colours you want the best...!

You can work with the settings in cam first and then adjust in post...maybe you should think to go to 18 frames by second, or rather do this in post, as you wount record any sound if you shoot in 18f upfront..good luck...and i guess focusing is quite always an issue with that LCD, but if you take care of it, zoom in, use auto focus, focus, zoom out-shoot, youll be fine..!

Yes,HVX200 LCD sucks! But I'm using external monitor and that makes focusing easyer.Your advice to go 18f sounds interesting, thanks!
