B*itch Fest

Yesterday I was walking home and I heard a voice coming from a megaphone. It sounded like it was just a half block down the street from me. Perhaps in the park?

I couldn't understand what was being said, but I ignored it and went inside. Inside I kept hearing it, and my curiosity built. So I grabbed my camera and went outside to have a look.

I discover that the voice is coming from an animal rights protester who is part of a small group of other protesters. They are on a small side street in front of someone's house. The are protesting the residents actions involving animal abuse; mainly against dogs and monkeys. Hardly anyone is watching the protesters. I decide to video tape.

The neighbors called the cops. The cops get there and say that Civil Services needed to come and handle the situation. The cops would make sure they did not leave.

NOTE: I wasn't able to stay until the end, which REALLY bothers me. I had things to do, and the cops said that it may be a while before Civil Service got there. So... I unfortunately left, and can not say how things turned out. I'm sorry.

NOTE: I was SURE I knew one of the protesters. The girl with the pink star earrings. I just checked my Crefeld year books and guess who I saw??? That's right, I saw HER! I never got to say hi though. :(

TECH NOTES: Shot with the DVX100AP, 24p Mode... edited with Final Cut HD, compressed using Soreson Squeeze 4.0, used the Sorenson 3 video codec (tried using the 3ivx codec, but it would crash the program when I added the crop filter. Did this on both Squeeze and Cleaner)....

Wow. Love the 'Docu' stuff.

I have zero issues with people protesting and being heard; which is something this country lacks but if I lived on that street I'd be like "WTF people? Shuuutt uupp!! I'm surfing DVX and playing BF2; bastids!"

That was great. Pretty objective filmmaking although that's something impossible to attain. My favorite piece was after the police showed up, you had a close-up of a cop drinking propel with the protester in the background telling a joke, what a weird moment..

too bad you didnt get the cops beating em down, you couldve sold the tape to the news... your footage wouldve been worldwide bro! haha.
and a dvx plug at that!
nice one.

Thanks everyone.

PK Gillock - Yes, it was just the on camera mic. It's all I have right now until I get a bit more money. And I encoded it ata firly low bit rate too.

John Hudson - I agree. I am all for protesting. And I DO understand why the neighbors would be upset. I understand that the way coorperations are set up, its next to impossible to have your message heard by who you want. It seems resorting to finding their personal homes is what they have to do. But I DO feel bad for the neighbors because they had nothing to do with it.

RGD Films - You know I was thinking about your Scientology piece as I shot this. That IS a weird moment. To me, I think the protester was a LITTLER nervous when the cops were there. I could see it in his walk. Perhaps the joke just kind of came out because he wasn't thinking as much any more. Anyways - I didn't want to get to involved in anything because I wasn't prepaired for this to happen, and I had other things I needed to do. So I just stayed to the side and shot what I thought looked the most interesting.

I should mention that the title I chose "***** Fest" doesn't mean I think they are only bitching. It was a low-brow play on words because a female dog is a "*****". And it was dogs they were defending. And yes, one could call what the protesters were doing "bitching". So... yeh... thats how I came up with the title.

Thanks Again Everyone! :) (I love this site.)

You love this site? Hang on there, buddy. DVXuser is my girlfriend and she would never leave me for you! We were meant to be together. If I can't have DVXuser, nobody can!!!

Interesting stuff.

It appears that the protestor's strategy was simply to be as obnoxious as they could manage, in order to get their issue some attention. I don't know if overall that will win them sympathy or not.

I got a little annoyed at the cops demanding IDs. There were some contentious problems here in Denver, as cops were taking pictures of protestors and keeping 'files' on them. I wonder what the legalities are and what the consequences would be to refuse to show ID?

Also, I am under the impression that most communities insist that if you are going to stage a public protest and electronically amplify your voice, you need a permit. The courts have been erring on the side of the cops in most of these disputes, even though we have a constiutional right to free assembly.

Ohh, I am sorry PK. "You're ***** chose me. We can handle this like some gentleman, or get into some gangsta sh*t..."

Actally, thats from the Snoop Dogg CD. I was gonna use that sound clip at the end of one of my videos. But in all seriousness, you are welcme to date the website with out my getting in the way :)

Speedbump. Yeh, I don't know either. Could be why I've never really protested before. I've wanted too, but I have such claustrophobia, I am terrified of being in a jail cell. And I like my body and don't want it beaten by a police officer. I'm not what the rules are either, but they seemed to know a lot. They had a lot to say in response to neighbors saying they had to leave. At one point in the video they talk about having the constitutional right to be here. Sounded liek the studied all the laws before going out so they could handle the situation and not be lied t by the cops.

TTT - I thought about that. I've taped some stuff that SHOULD be on the news. If you check out my site:

http://www.dbprod.biz/videomind

You will see a video called Friday Night, which I witnessed and video taped not just one but TWO men beating up women. Two seperate events, completly unrelated to each other, happening at the same time. Anyways... I'd LOVE to plug the DVX in all it's glory on the news.

SLIMOTHY - Thank you. :) It was a bit annoying, but maybe that was the point. When he busted into jokes I just thought that was bizzare. But very interesting too.

i just checked the 'friday night' footage. interesting... is this street anywhere near the b*tch fest animal location? if so the neighbors are obviously used to the noise, so the bullhorn was no irritation at all! what does 'you f*cking boo' mean? hahaHAHA. kinda had a pimp$ and ho$ relationship type-of-feeling. hopefully they paid the cab at least, he was probably happy just to not get shot and escape. the 'whip her a$$' dialogue around the corner was a nice touch. doh!

disclaimer: i totally condemn abuse against women.

you should be freelance for the local news. things are always happening near your house... just pull the camera out, and something takes place right? j/k
nice work.

Intresting stuff! If there going to protest at least get a few more folks out there! I haven't personally seen a protest since back in 87. I was still a young kid watching Transformers and GI -Joe. I personally don't like animal abuse but common some people protest against cruelality against rats and mouses. Man if they want to rescue rats, come get them at my house. I'm sure they more other important things to do than worry about a bunny. There's starving childern and broke filmmakers that needs the support.

*edit- please excuse my grammer and spelling, its late & I'm dumb! I'm not going to even bother fixing it. Spell check don't work anymore.

LOL!!!

I feel bad for the neighbors? Hell no! They way I see it is "Let it be known"!

Classic line in that first part: "If you don't like the first amendment move to Cuba"! God I love that!

The Army of the Five Monkeys are an enthusiastic bunch. ORGANIZE! UNITE! Let's stand on a sidewalk and mumble for an hour! They should have called me up. I could have handed out kazoos for spectators to play while I performed an interpretive dance.

Crazy stuff Magnum. Just watched Friday Night. I witnessed a couple similar situations in New York, 3 am, people drunk and getting crazy.

You've got all these captured moments and it's interesting to watch. Keep shooting. :)

WOW! Talk about an unsuspected response! So, thanks! I'm glad I made that video blog so I could share my other stuff. I'd go off again about how I feel about the protesters, but you can read all that in other posts of mine above.

The Friday Night video IS INDEED fairly close to the protest footage. The Friday Video was on the corner of 11th and South Street. The Protest was on 11th between South Street and another street. So very close together!

I don't have TOO much that goes on that often, believe it or not. I've lived in my place for 2 years, so being that I only have a few videos, shows not THAT much happens. Though maybe I've missed stuff.

TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, the Friday Night video was shot durring Philadelphia's GREEK PICNIC. I know that they had another one last Saturday night. What it is... is a festival kinda thing of African American fraternaties from apparently all over the COUNTRY that all get together in Philly and party. Clubs have specfic events going on and I don't know what else. The reason they call it "GREEK" is because of the FRATERNATIES.

But from what I've read, the picnic only happens once a year. The Friday Night video was shot only a few months ago. So maybe something ELSE was going on. I don't know.

I should also make a disclaimer that I don't use the word "Nigga" as you see in the video. I only put it there as a style kind of thing, trying to talk ghetto. I have NOTHING against black people, except those who are beating up women in the video.

I WOULD like to shoot for the news, so long as I got to go to crazy events all the time. We'll see what happens!!
