FS7: B&H Shows In Stock

There's a lot more to cinematography than just what the camera is doing and I think people forget that on projects with higher end budgets they typically use the Alexa, Red Epic and film cameras. But higher end films also have 1 ton grip and lighting packages and full crews and departments for art, set design, warddrobe, etc. All of that makes a huge difference in how a film "looks".

Under baseline conditions, these cameras in shootouts with the Sony F55 perform nearly identically. What is not identical are the actual production design of the films that shoot with an Alexa and one that's shooting with an FS7.

Same with the lighting package, crew size, and especially the post production pipeline and colorists involved.

Make no mistake, you can see godawful footage from Alexa's and Red Epics on the lower budget end where the playing field is more level and the films don't have excellent production design and a talented colorist.

So keep that in mind when "evaluating" a camera. Any budgeted feature using an FS7 probably won't finish post production for another few months. Currently all we're seeing is some pretty low budget experiments.

That about sums it up. Almost all of the footage (including what I could share) is people messing around and learning the camera. Steve Weiss from Zacuto keeps telling me "all of the cameras are good now. What matters is the rest of it - crew, light, story, sound...". I'm paraphrasing but you know what I mean.

And let's face it: the FS7 is within reach financially for a LOT more shooters who would have never considered spending $16,000-20,000+ on a camera. Yet the camera, essentially, has the guts of a very serious and much higher priced camera: the F5 (and elements of the F55) inside of it. Inexperienced shooters and people not used to Slog are going to F it up as they learn. That's just the way it is, for everyone at some point in their career.

With the Fs7 - you are going to see a lot more of the inexperienced people because the camera is so affordable. Once bigger productions start using it, things will change. The problem is not the camera (the images that can come out of it are frankly, right up there). The problem is people.

Don't forget to ask!

Don't forget to ask!

Don't forget that if you are ordering a popular camera alone at places like B&H they can't give you a discount while the cameras are hot, but if you order a bunch of accessories (cards, battery, etc) they will give a discount on the whole thing if you ask. I just ordered the FS7K with cards, and a few other things and received approx. 1% off. FYI. It's kind of like getting one expensive accessory for free.

.

Its not the fact the cameras are hot... Every dealer is selling that camera or camera kit at the same price... Why is that...? While I sell the camera at the same price... I can make any pricing on other items/orders I want to... Did you pay cash or did you take the 12 month zero interest lease deal on the camera?

On a side note, will B&H loan you a camera if yours shows up not working correctly out of the box? Just wondering...

I did get a very good price and consider myself as a very early adopter getting my
FS7 in early november.

It just makes a difference if you purchase one thing here, the other thing there or
if you have a local dealer where you try to purchase everything over the years.
This will make up for big discounts...

It's worth being loyal sometimes...
