B&H policy of testing before buying?

What kind of policy is there at B&H about testing that camere your buing before paying it? I´m coming to buy a EX1 from B&H and I´m coming from Finland and I think it´s quite hard to get these problems(vignetting etc.) fixed here in finland without paying for it. So I would like to test the camera in the store to make sure it doesn´t have these problems and if it does change it to another camera. Do they allow me to do that in B&H. And if they do, could some one post once more a list of all the things I should test?

Thanks,

Jony

Once you've bought the camera you can find a quiet patch of NYC and shoot to your heart's content, but we cannot pre-test equipment for you. We usually have a seating area near our store exit, but the store's in the middle of an expansion project and I don't know if it'll be there when you arrive.

Henry,

Thanks for your reply. It´s not a problem for me to go and test it somewhere else. But if I find those problems(vignetting etc.) in the camera I bought, is it possible to come back and change the item to another Ex1 before I return to Finland. Cause as I mentioned earlier it´s very expensive for me to find those problems once I´m already back in Finland...

Thanks again,

Are you saying you won´t let a customer test the stuff you sell in the store?
First buy it, then test it, then - if broken - fill in a RMA form and wait 3 weeks...?:2vrolijk_08:

Can he test it in store?

For the most part NYC retail vendors will not allow anywhere near extensive testing of an out of stock camera. B & H, AbelCine and the few others who stock the camera, may have one camera on display for meet, greet and play purposes. If you have a problem, many will allow an exchange, if in store stock exists.

If you can't test in the store and the return policy is strict or costly then I wouldn't buy from them.

Period.

I agreed. However, I believed that this is the case because the camera is pretty much out of stock everywhere....at least at this time. I believed that after a year or so, the retailer will be much friendlier.

Have you ever found a professional video equipment dealer who doesn't have a strict or costly return policy?

No but I have always been able to demo the unit in store and on occasion they have let models even go out for testing (Of course with my CC on the line in case anything happened).

Barry, you have had to have purchased dozens of cameras and expensive what nots... who have you found to have the best service and best in house testing policy?

What would you recommend to the original poster?

I've never had the luxury of living in a town that has a professional video dealer before. I've had to make internet purchases. I bought from Rush when he was at EVS, I've bought from B&H, and I've bought from Abel and from ProMax, and ... well, probably more, but recently I think mostly from B&H.

I think B&H probably has the most liberal return policy of all of them.

Yeah... I keep forgetting that a good number of people don't live near larger professional video dealers.

I don't know why I thought you lived in Los Angeles?

Are you still in North Carolina?

I wonder if our original poster could find an EX1 for rent in NYC?

Certainly, as long as the return conforms to our return policy and comes back to us as the policy describes. You could test it in the store, but the construction situation temporarily limits available space. I think some others here misconstrued my earlier reply, BTW.

Yah i'm not sure why ppl mangled your reply Henry. Ofcourse BH will let you play with a demo unit before you buy, most pro stores do, so why would they be any diff. He just said unclearly that they are going through renos so there might be enough room or the demo section might not be up. @ Leats thats how i understood it after he typed it.

This seems very fair to me:

And that's what I said, I think B&H is about the best. Many stores/dealers won't let you return a camera AT ALL, and those that will usually require a 15% restocking charge.

B&H gives you 15 days and a full refund. I haven't found other stores willing to do that.

Henry and others,

Thanks for the answers. It´s good to know that I can change it to other camera if I notice vignetting or other faults. I have to admit that I have visited B&H couple of times earlier and I have been pleased with the service. And this return policy is another good example. My points goes to B&H

I´m not coming until march so I hope the construction in the shop has ended and I can test it in the shop and head back to Finland knowing my camera works as it should...
