B & H Photo sold me a Canadian camera. Should I be worried?

That's great advice. I know somebody who works at a one of the networks here in Chicago. I'll ask her if they use any Panasonic equipment.

I learned a lesson from your story. If I ever ship my camera (for any reason) I will take pictures and video of the camera as I put it in the box and send it off. Maybe some visual proof would have helped you. Otherwise, it's just your word against theirs. If these Mack Warranties are indeed a ripoff EVSOnline and B&H should stop carrying them.

I'm so glad there are boards like this where people can share their experiences. I honestly feel that if the consumers put pressure on places like EVS and B&H they will, in turn, put pressure on Mack or refuse to sell their products. GRASS ROOTS CONSUMER ACTIVISM!!!!!!
In the Imortal words of Grandmaster Flash: WORD!

I'm confused. You ordered a used dvx, but got a greymarket brand new canadian dvx with no hours on it? Are used cameras supposed to come with a warranty? Just trying to wrap my head around this.

The camera was in the "used" section at B&H's website, but the description said "New, unopened in box." When called, B&H said that it was an older version without Magic Bullet and the free book, which is why it was selling for less. They said the warranty was good. It isn't. They were either misinformed or intentionally mislead several people on these boards who purchased them and all got the same incorrect information.

Hi everyone, I recently emailed B & H photo about the used/brand new Canadian camera that I received and I asked them if I could return it or get one with an US warrenty. Here is there response: "If this camera breaks, B&H will have it repaired free of charge to you by Panasonic. Any charges will be covered by us. This warranty if for one year from date of purchase.

If you want to return the camera, you may do that by sending it back to us attention Used Department." So I guess that I will keep it now I just hope that what they say is true.

You better get that in writing!

But you give up the Magic Bullet @$295, The DVX Book/DVD @ $69.96, The $180 5400mA Battery, the $240 worth of free tape and a $300 rebate. So from their used price of $2795, to their new price of #$3395, you would still come out ahead if you bought the new.

To each their own.

Best,

Jan

Another way to look at it is this:

$2795 For Camera
$70 Book/DVD from Barry since he earns more $$ that way. (presumably)
$80 DVXuser.com battery from Jarred since it helps advertise this user group
$60 Reasonably Priced videotapes
-$10 Interest earned on $300 in a money market for one month while not waiting on rebate.
$3000 + Used Copy Of MB Editors: $100, give or take. (if someone wants it)
$3100, miraculously the same price as if buying product from an authorized US dealer.

All depends on if you need the extras like a battery and videotape. In the end, probably makes sense to stick to an authorized dealer right now with the blowout specials Panny is currently offering. If they weren't being sooo competitive right now, I'd probably order a $2795 camera from B&H myself.

At the time that was what I was thinking. I ordered the camera on May 2nd (the day B&H reopened) and at the time the offer only included Barry's book/DVD and Magic Bullet software. Well I ended up ordering Barry's Book/DVD anyway and I already read through it (Well worth the money, I went to video production school but learned a lot of things that I have been wondering about but were never taught and I now feel comfotable with the DVX) and from what I hear Magic Bullet is not fully compatiable with Final Cut Pro 3 plus my new creidt card has a low intrest rate and I could only charge $2900.00 on it. I also felt that buying the camera would be safe since B & H was authorized at the time that I ordered the camera. Well that's why I decided to order the used/brand new camera from B & H photo if I knew at the time that Panasonic was going to throw in more extras then I probably would of bought a new DVX 100a.

I would feel confident in your purchase, honestly. I don't need MagicBullet and I'd rather have a DVXuser.com battery to help advertise this site for Jarred everywhere I go...

I found this information on the NY BBB website:

http://www.newyork.bbb.org/library/...5.html#Warranty

"In New York State, any retail dealer who offers for sale gray market goods must disclose the following information, when applicable:

The product is not accompanied by a US warranty;
The product is not accompanied by instructions in English;
The product is not eligible for a rebate offered by the manufacturer.
The above information must be posted on either a sign attached to the item, a sign at the point of sale such as attached to the cash register, or a sign clearly visible to the customer from the register.

If a merchant violates any of the above provisions, the buyer has up to 20 days from the date of purchase to request a refund or credit on a credit card purchase provided that the item has not been used or damaged by the buyer. Also, the New York State Attorney General can fine organizations that violate the above provisions. Penalties of $500 can be imposed by a court of law for each violation. Gray market goods may also be available by mail order. New York law states that any retail dealer engaged in a mail order business selling gray market merchandise must include the information stated above in its print advertising. The information must be in type of a conspicuous size."

I hope this information helps anyone who intends to buy or has bought gray market goods. Gray market goods are not in and of themselves a bad thing. Money can be saved and the products are normally identical to non-gray goods. We live in a global marketplace where goods produced by multi-national corporations are bought and sold all over the world in various packages and forms. It is up to the buyer and seller to negotiate in good faith as to exactly what those goods will and will not represent. Buyers do your homework, sellers be upfront.

I agree indeed that if people are starting to experience issues with certain products, we will stop carrying them, and we have done so in the past with certain vendors. However, I have yet to hear any of my personal customers complain about a mack warranty repair issue.

The only complaint I heard before, was that Mack made the customer buy the upgraded "Pro" version of a warranty when they found out the customer was not a "consumer" but a "pro" user that had pro shoots lined up. But that's it.

Before I am to committ a call to Mack, a company that has never given me reason to worry before, I will need evidence from EVS customers. Any EVS customers wanting to report unfair/fraudulent activity by Mack can email me at rush@evsonline.com.

My appologies to B&H. My camera is, in fact, covered by a U.S. Warranty. After speaking with a number of folks from Panasonic, I have found that if you look at the model # beneath the viewfinder and it ends in "P" as in DVX100A-P then your unit is a North American US/Canada unit and your warranty is valid in the country in which you make your purchase.

Actually this is untrue. I just spoke with the Service Manager, someone, the person you spoke to is mistaken. We will only service those products that have a serial number assigned to the US. A or AP, doesn't matter the Serial number must be one of ours!!!!!!!

Please contact me off line and give me the name of the individual that gave you this incorrect information.

Thanks,

Jan
