Got a friend who is selling all his film equipment and I'm in need of a shotgun mic. Before I buy can anyone let me know if this is a good shotgun mic. Thanks.

A real friend wouldn't be trying to saddle you with an SGM-2X.

Seriously, though. Unless the asking price is unusually low (say around $20), you should pass on this one. Only buy this mic if you already have all the sound gear you need, and are in the market for a mic that you can put in harm's way or use as an emergency backup. Using this mic for most recording applications is an exercise in sorrow and frustration.

Alright well I am looking into getting a RODE NTG-2
I hear that's a good one.
Excellent entry level mic - a lot of mic for the money. It's super-cardioid polar pattern makes it more forgiving indoors than most shotgun mics, a definite advantage if you're just starting to assemble an audio kit.

I've been using a Zoom H2 for sound which has been working great but I need to upgrade to a shotgun mic.

Actually I should rephrase my last post and see if anyone can help me with this situation.

I should have said I'm going to buy another RODE NTG-2 because I got one for Christmas four months ago and the battery compartment will not unscrew. A RODE employee I talked over the phone with said it has something to do with threads being crossed. Not shipping it back to the company because last time I sent something back it almost got lost and took 3 months to come back.

So question is. Anyone know any good places in America where they can repair a shotgun mic that has a battery compartment that will not unscrew because of threads that are crossed.

I'd send you to my guy, but he's in Canada.

It may be a bit more cost effective to just buy a battery-powered phantom power supply, if your camera or recorder won't supply it.
