Awake Test image

Ok, had another shoot on Saturday. It was a blast. I used some new techniqes that I havn't used before so I thought i would post a grab and see what everyone thought about it. This is another dream sequence from the film. After I get a few comments I will explain more about the process, however I don't want knowing about the process to influence your comments. Does that make sense?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Awake Test image

Oooh, I like. For the process, I'd guess green screen with the dolly city shot keyed in, then a wierd blur... But I could definetly be wrong. Hard to tell with just the still.

I like it though man... Good 'dream look' to it.

Re: Awake Test image

however you did it it looks awesome. ditto what drummerboy said, very dreamlike.

Re: Awake Test image

I would also say green screen, then speed up/timelapse backround, put on greenscreen, let image on Screen bleed around the guy, adding to the sex fx

Re: Awake Test image

Or.....

He stood there FROZEN in a timelapse state; while played back, everything rushes by except our static talent?

:D

Re: Awake Test image

Well, your all right, partially. It is indeed a greenscreen shot. This was my first attempt at greenscreening. The background was timelapsed footage and then "John" was shot later, also timelapsed. The main thing I wanted to know is if you could tell that it was a composite. I guess I have some more work to do. The main reason that I shot this green screen was becasue of the weather. IT is freaking cold up here right now, and I didn't want to have john standing in downtown Seattle for 4 hours barefoot. It did work out rather nice because in the final I the people walking by him, will now be walking though him, causing him to blur and strobe.
Any suggestions as to how I could make this more convincing, ie. not screem greenscreen?

Thanks for your comments.

Re: Awake Test image

Maybe DVX background with DSLR shots of the sleeping guy. I'm guessing you composited the two together and color timed to match. It looks great.

Edit:

Late with my reply. It's actually a good keying job and I think the composite looks pretty good. I'm not sure what it looks like in motion, but it looks pretty good as a still. Maybe you could try very subtle grain matching to try and blend it even more.

Re: Awake Test image

Very cool. I'm curious though, are you shooting w the Anamorphic lens?
Can't wait to see the finished project, you have me intrigued....

Re: Awake Test image

DUDE! I use to live in the building on the left (near the truck with its lights on). There use to be a Blimpies sandwich shop on the first floor and I would go there everyday, after work, and get me some dinner. Oh man I miss home soooo much. That's at the corner if 3rd and Pike. That is SO weird to see your old home in a grab. Small world.

The shot looks REALLY good. That, along with the field sequence, and I think you're short film is going to look great and be very interesing to watch. Any chance we can see a clip of this timelapse shot? antOmic started a thread about timelapse just yesterday. Check it out!

Re: Awake Test image

and here i am! scharky, this looks really cool, and i am continually impressed with all the imagination you are putting into this film. a sure gem. hope we all get to see it when you are completed.

in regards to helping the greenscreen composite, i think if you hit "john" with some light on the camera left side (his face and chest) it would be more convincing that he is standing in that environment with the light spilling on to him. i do finish art for movie posters, and this is a problem i run into all the time, trying to get elements from one shoot to blend with another. but the benefit i have in photoshop is i can illustrate on one frame, video is another story...you got to light that stuff good in the source.

Re: Awake Test image

Crap, I just had a whole reply written out and then I accidently refreshed the page. Has anybody done that before? :'(
Thanks for the comment antomic. That is exactly what was missing. I am fixing right now as we speak, running a batch in photoshop (which is a great keyer by the way). If it still doesn't look right I may reshoot, but I am trying to avoid that as I only have access to the actors on the weekends.
P.K. That is exactly where I shot, right up the street from the SAM, glad I could give you a little taste of home.
Double_IT, the film, in a nutshell is about the mysteries of dreams. John, the main character, who incidently is named John in real life as well, is stuck between his dreams and real life. However, his dreams are interacting with what he is experiencing in life. His wife and brother become concerned and take him to the hospital, where the viewer continues to see things through the eyes of Johns "waking dream". However, things arean't always as they seem. :D Like how I threw that in in the end there. ;D
If this test works out, I try and post a little clip. It's only about 5 seconds long as it was all stop motion, however this entire sequence will be about 45 sec. I've got a lot of work ahead of me.

Re: Awake Test image

Scharky, very nice of course. I would like to see a clip of this shot. It does though looked little processed. When you did the green screen did you do it at the same location or was it in a studio enviroment?

Re: Awake Test image

The thing that tipped it off to me was the lighting on John.  You can see the light pointed at him and causing his arm and the wrinkles to cast shadows "away" from the viewer. Also seems to be a bit bright on his face.

Notice the shadows in the bus stop.  Wwaayy diffused, more like a black blur than a shadow, and also coming from behind John, back towards the viewer.

In my limited experience, this is what makes the difference between pro greenscreening, and not-so-pro.  Being able to guess at, and reproduce, exactly the lighting that the subject would be in if they were "in" the scene.

That being said, I still think you did an incredible job on the actual color/look matching.  If it weren't for the lighting, I wouldn't have been able to tell.

For reals, great work.

Hopefully, this helps some,
Jared

Weird. We are in pre-production on a film called "lucid' which is also about dreams. I hope this isnt the year of dream movies.
:-/

Re: Awake Test image

wow, that is the sharpest, cleanest DVX ive ever seen..... If you told me that was Xl2, i would have been like: "i believe it".

Re: Awake Test image

The only real criticism I could even muster would be that his skin looks a touch yellow while the others in the scene have a bluish cast. If this is intentional, then disregard. It's cool for aesthetic and to make him stand out for sure.
