Avoid being BANNED from DVXUser.com

It seems to me (and correct me if I'm wrong) that the ones getting banned are usually users that haven't been around that long. Barry's explanation is perfect about waiting behind the edge of the jungle and watching to see how things work for a bit, then engaging, using the written, and "unwritten" rules of this unique forum.

Since I have noticed several new-comers joining pretty recently I wanted to warn them that if you see this as a place to "hang out" and find info and support as an independent filmmaker, you need to respect others here. I have often said to myself, "who do all these guys think they are" in a sense that if they are really trying to make films, why would they spend so much of their time online here. But I have come the realization that this is a support group for those of us insane enough to make this our life, our work, our passion, our outlet. I need this as much as everyone else, and I am grateful for those who protect it, like it's some king of wildlife preserve. Don't disrespect us, we (as artists) are the last truth tellers. I love this place, you are all my friends... Oh, and don't piss off the mods. I probably could have just said that, huh?

Hey, have you guys seen this great canoe I've been making?

Hudson's arm is bigger than my thigh...

Now, if Hudson's arm is bigger than your thigh, logic would indicate the principal of diminishing returns is active in your trousers, so....

Hmm, you must be beating the girls off.....:(

In Defense of the Mods

The fact is this forum is loaded with useful information for the aspiring filmmaker. Every once in a while we go astray with a post or a link that is totally unrelated to the dvx or filmmaking. After a laugh or two its right back to business as usual. I like not having to wade thru thousands of posts to find Hudson's anatomy of a scene thread or the latest DIY idea. I know it seems unfair and stuffy to newbies. I read this site for almost two years before I joined. It was informative and influential in my decision to purchase the dvx. After I made my mind up I joined and I have learned a great deal here. There are a number of other filmmaking forums that allow a lot of things that don't go on here. The discussion of film is a big part of what goes on here but the focus is not to meet some unseen quota of activity. Frankly I like that about this site. Perhaps banning is a bit harsh maybe suspensions should be used for newbies that stray or get off track. Thats entirely up to the mods. The fact that someone is banned doesn't keep them from making use of this site for its intended purpose.

Almost every time someone is banned it's because they are one of three internet video board trolls, only two of which I know their first names. It's not hoards of people being banned left and right, only the same three again and again. (Mike, Mike, and Pete/Radek/whatever his name is...)

Yeah, it's me, a noob, posting in this dvxuser elitist thread. Don't hurt me.

I totally agree with the idea of sitting back and watching what's going on around here before posting. I can't remember how I stumbled across this site, but I've been addicted ever since. What an incredible resource for any aspiring or established filmmaker. I was a virtual peeping tom for at least six months before I began posting. I got an idea of the online personalities of members here and their style so to speak. Things like, if you ask a dumb question, Pookie will give you ****. If you don't do a search first, Pookie will give you ****. If you ***** about Panasonic, EVERYONE will give you ****.

I was raised to respect others, and I do that no matter whether I'm online or in the real world. Some people like to hide behind their keyboard and participate in ridiculous forum feuding. Opinions and debate are great, but I've definitely read quite a few personal attacks here from noobs AND vets. Just because you've got a lot of posts doesn't make you better than anyone here. With exceptions of the all knowing gurus, you're really just a film geek like me who sits at his/her computer way too much.

This place has brought me over from the dark side of an Xl-1. I'm justing waiting for the 100B official announcement before deciding on pulling the trigger. Thank you for this great forum. Now get offline and make a film!

Goodnight...
