Avid Xpress Pro

I need to buy a new laptop which can do dvcproHD editing. I haven't decided whether or not I should go w/ PC or MAC.

If I go with PC then I'd be editing on the Avid Xpress Pro. I've heard that the program may run better on a 3.6ghz single core than on 2.0 ghz duo core because the Avid doesn't fully take advantage of the duo core. Is this accurate?

Anybody? Any advice you guys can provide would be appreciated. I'm at a bit of a crossroads in deciding which way to go (PC or MAC).

If you're going with a laptop, definitely get an Avid-qualified model: AXP System Requirements. You can fudge a bit with desktop models, but with a laptop, you're not really able to change parts as needed to fall in line with system specs. You'll save yourself a lot of headache and heartbreak if you do get an approved model.

As far as PC or Mac, when it comes to Avid, it really doesn't make a bit of difference. There's parity between them these days. Get whichever platform you're more comfortable with, and whatever you have more supporting software for.

And definitely get a dual-core system--a single-core system is a waste of money.

Yeah, a dual-core (if you can afford it) is definitely the way to go. Last I checked, Avid code is still 32-bit and isn't optimized to utilize a second processor for rendering, etc.. I believe Avid utilizes a second processor only for playback. In any case, investing in a dual-core (or even quad) machine is wise.
