Avid Xpress Pro woes

Ok, I hope someone can help me out with this. I'm sooooooo frustrated.

Problem 1: I have two firewire buses (one IBM 1394 PCM card and one 1394 port on the back of the machine) on my computer (Toshiba Satellite 5105-5607). When I connect my DVX100A to either port, I get a message that the device is unrecognized. I have no idea what to do! I also have a Sony D-8 that connects with no problems.

Problem 2 (this is more of an Avid problem): I had Xpress DV 3.5 running fine. I upgraded to Xpress Pro and it barely works. It won't create any new projects and the old project I have on there won't budge because it says it is missing a Bin file. I have XP Home running but I think I might need XP Pro. Would the upgrade package be fine?

Anyway, I am sooooooo frustrated. I thought maybe someone could help. Michael P? I'm in Los Angeles.

Ok, most of my problems have been solved. The camera is now recognized by my computer. I upgraded from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional. That seemed to solve it. Also, I installed Service Pack 1 which really helped the computer become more stable.

And Avid now recognizes the camera and can import footage. The problem now is that I can only create one project after a new installation. Everytime I try to create a new project, I get an error message saying that the project cannot be found. It is soooooo frustrating. I'm hoping Michael P or somebody can shed some light.

WARNING: If you are using Avid, I strongly recommend NOT installing the Microsoft Hot Fix KB824141. This usually causes some severe unstability, at least with Avid Xpress Pro.

Make sure the projects folder is inside the programs/Avid/XPress Pro folder. Also make sure that you make projects "local". Then I would check to make sure you don't have any permissions set at the OS level that prevent the user from making new folders etc.

The Project folder is in the appropriate area.

But two dumb questions . . .

1. What do you mean by "local" projects?

and

2. How exactly do I make sure that the OS permissions are set so the user can make new folders? I'm running Win XP Pro.

When you create a NEW project, you have the option of local, shared, or private. Make sure you select LOCAL for the purpose of this test.

Also, if you are not logging in as the Adminsitrater, make sure all the rights needed are associated with that logon name.

Ok, I think we've solved my problem.

I did a COMPLETE reinstall of Avid Xpress Pro 4.1.1. This time, when I first created a Project, I made sure I created it as "Shared" and now it is working fine. In addition, I made the Avid folder a Shared folder on the network.

My advice to anyone experiencing this kind of problem is to avoid creating a "Private" project.

Ugh. I tinkered with the Project files and the problem is back. Guess I'd better reinstall. There's gotta be a better way . . .

I was gonna upgrade 3.5 to pro.
I am running XP profesional.
Am i gonna have any problem. Do i have to get rid off the microsoft patches...?

If anyone, as Dc here, had experienced problems in the upgraded would it be good to post it here and give a short list of what to do. I am thinkin, for example in what are the microsoft stuff that has to be clean out. And whatever is important to do it properly.

In my case i have to be very careful cause i have a short almost done in the 3.5 and don´t wanna have any loose in the upgrading process.

Any advice, please.

I'm not sure what to tell you. Do you have an Avid authorized-system with Avid tech support?

If I were you, I would probably finish my short in Xpress 3.5, if possible. Then I would consider the upgrade. When I went from 3.5 to Pro, I couldn't access my old project (which was almost completed).

I also hear SP1a may have cause problems with Avid. That is what I have.

Regardless of program, application, etc. it is always a good idea to finish the current project before doing an upgrade. Unless there is something that you cannot live without in the upgraded version (big fix etc.) then finish the project first. Feature animation productions go for almost three years on the same version of software during production...

I wanned to upgraded cause i was going to start another project.
I feel i have my computer kidnapped by this short.
