AVID Xpress Pro HD 5.5

it could always monitor HD, by downconverting it to SD. and that's what this does, right?

You're right, I'm sorry. In all the NAB news I thought I had read that Mojo SDI would actually monitor true HD, but a quick review at avid.com shows just the downconvert. Oh well.....

Guys! Am I hallucinating or what? I understand that 5.5 supports HD monitoring FULL SCREEN through a DVI port. That should mean full-resolution display of HD material on an inexpensive LCD.

If this is confirmed.... that would be just great and to me much better that any HD capabilites of mojo (which would mean expensive adapters to hook up a DVI-LCD).

If you'd use one of that new mainboards supporting two fast PCIe graphic cards (yeah, I know, not AVID supported) you can have THREE DVI ports, two for the desktop, one for hires monitoring. Wow. How cool is this - if true.

Looks confirmed from that first page. This is what has been missing from xpress pro HD and this might keep me from moving to a mac/fcp config.

What I don't see is a release date and an upgrade price.

Release date is expected to be June 2006, but I also don´t see any update price for any of the new products. It would be really interesting how much an Update from Xpress Pro to the new Media Composer 2.5 (software only) would be. Maybe there will be a special price for short period ?

Actually I hoped they put full editable Timewarp effects in Xpress Pro, with the next release, but it seems that with the new MC this will never happen :crybaby: .

Timewarps in Xpress really suxs !!!!

Yeah, because Avid Xpress Pro 5.5 is going to be so advanced that MC is not going to be worth the money.
right. except that with the new structuring of Media Composer products (runs standalone, with a mojo, or an adrenaline), it looks to me that Xpress Pro is eventually going to be phased out. there's really very little difference between the two.

from the Avid Mojo site:

"Avid Mojo and Avid Mojo SDI let you monitor and output HD timelines in SD with real-time down-convert."

and from the following image, the DVI ports are a catchall for SDI, component, S-Video, etc. that being the case, this will be downconverted SD monitoring only. otherwise they'd be advertising HD-SDI connections.

The monitoring HD through a DVI port that JanBee is talking about is actually something that is bypassing the new Mojo. If you have a dual head card and one or both of those heads is a DVI connection, then you can monitor out of the second connection for full screen playback similar to FCP's Digital Media Desktop or whatever they call it. Now whether that's full rez HD, remains to be seen.

I actually hope that this will happen. It's always been my contention that Avid should have one piece of software and you can just unlock resolutions and I/O options by buying whatever hardware you want. I'd even bargain with them and say that their Symphony and Nitris can remain, but make Media Composer, give me software only, then give me DNA hardware options that I can pick and choose. That may be where they're going. Notice the quite demise of Xpress DV? But at the same time, they have yet to post an upgrade path from Xpress Pro to Media Composer Software only.
