Avid Won't Play...

I'm using Avid Xpress Pro HD and have been for a while, but recently upgraded my computer.

I shoot with an HVX200 and usually in 720P 24... so here's my problem. Avid won't play back anything. It will play the audio but the video either freezes or disappears. When I compile, it compiles fine but won't play in real-time, even though it used to with my older computer and this new computer is even faster.

Anyone know what I can do?

It would seem odd to me if it were my video card... since when I compile any project it plays just fine and I can easily go through the frames of my clips without it freezing... not to mention I'm able to edit and view just fine on both my old computer, which has a four-year old video card and my laptop which just comes with the card Dell included.

On my new computer setup, I'm running an ATI-RADEON X1650... could the problem possibly be that I need to run extra power to the video card?

It's your video card (actually, it's the video card driver). Trust me. Avid has a very small list of supported video cards. It has to do with the video overlay feature. You can scrub frames just fine, but cannot play them in real time. My laptop has an ATI X1400 and I had the SAME problem.

Dells usually come with the NVidia cards, which have better drivers.

Try downloading the Omega drivers for your video card. Installing these drivers worked for me...

Well, I'm getting pretty angry about all of this -- I just installed the Omega drivers but still it's not working... any tips?

Did you uninstall the old drivers first?

What I did was uninstall the "Display Adapter" from the device manager. Then I rebooted. Then I installed the Omega drivers. Then I rebooted again. Then I tried Avid and it worked. I'm 95% sure that's how I did it. I installed the different drivers over a month ago.

Well, I did everything in the order that you said and still nothing with Avid.

I uninstalled the drivers via device manager, and then I rebooted. Then I installed the Omega Drivers, (after uninstalling the CCC), then I rebooted again. It's still not working, though I think it's recognizing the omega drivers now because my screen isn't jumpy when I scroll, but I'm not sure.

I really can't afford to be buying another video card just after I bought this one... is there something I'm doing wrong?

hmm... Go to the desktop, right click 'My Computer', click Properties. Then the 'Hardware' tab, the 'Device Manager'. Click the plus next to Display Adapter. Does it say it's using the Omega drivers? Which version of Windows are you running? XP or Vista?
