AVID vs. PREMIERE

Hello post-production people-

I have a quick question for you AVID/Premiere users which I will repost on the Premiere thread. Can anyone who has experience with both of these programs steer me into the right direction in terms of which NLE system has a better feature set? I currently have Premiere Pro 1.5 and only find that it is marginally good. Sure I can edit on it, but after using the Interface of Final Cut Pro HD, I realize that Premiere leaves much to be desired. I don't have a MAC though. I think Premiere is a little too simple and could offer more in the way of a better interface design, better color correction and effects tools, etc. Would AVID give me these options?

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

I just started to learn how to edit not that long ago, I decided to pick up Avid because I needed something to edit 24p because I just got the DVX and the old Premiere I had did not feature 24p compatbility.

I have to say Avid is REALLY different from Premiere. I edited with Premiere before, and it is more similar to FCP. There's not as much drag and drop in Avid (at least, so far from what I learned). If you like the drag and drop stuff, I'd say stick with Premiere. If you want to try something totally different, and forces you to be precise, I'd say go for Avid. But my advice is just from newbie perspective.

thanks hkff.

I am still looking for more input because before i sink my teeth into a new program, id like to make sure its worth it. but you are the 2nd person who leans towards avid. ive only seen the interface and it reminded me of FCP.

Avid editing has the scrub jkl (frame by frame option with the jkl keys) and trim modes, that I really like. Marking ins and outs are essential in Avid; you don't have the luxury of just picking stuff up with the click of the mouse.

I feel Avid is much more complicated than Premiere or FCP. Kind of difficult to explain, and it takes some more time to learn compared to the other NLEs. So if you have the time, try downloading the trial version from their website. Good luck.

Trying demos would be the best option to see if you like it or not. If you like FCP then you might consider looking at Sony Vegas and try that demo. It is totally different from the other NLE's but with the new version 6.0 it has really caught up to Avid and Premiere. Not to mention it also acts like a sequencer program for music editing. In Avid you will need another program to do the music editing IE protools or Audigy to do what Vegas has built into their system. After trying all the demos, then you can get a grasp what will be your best option.

Wait for PPro 2.0 to make your final decision. It should be out in 3-4 months. Adobe has a chance to make one of the best integrated suites period. Encore is the only weak link in their suite.

i have used Premiere 6, and then changed to Avid. i haven't used PPro, but i can assume that the basic editing functions would be there. i prefer Avid, mainly due to stability, and a big plus is its media management. i have edited a feature film on version 3.5.4, and was totally impressed. just for note, i purchased Avid mainly due to its color correction abilities. Premiere 6 had none at the time.

i have not looked back. you should check the specs of both products to see what they offer, and most importantly what you are comfortable editing with, Avid does have a learning curve, but once you understand the workflow, you can really move. in my case, if Premiere 6 had good color correction, i would have stuck with Adobe to complete my film.

the one thing i hate about Avid is the dongle issue. lose it, and be prepared to buy the full product again
