FS7: Avid vs Premiere S-log3 LUT

I've been on Avid MC fourteen years editing each day but switched to Premiere in these last five-six years. Working with S-log3 in Premiere Pro CC2014 is a breeze and it looks really nice. Now I wanted to fresh up on my Avid editing so I started to do what I do in Premiere but in Avid MC8.

When I AMA link my FS7 footage shot with S-log3.Sgamut and apply, by the looks of it, the same Sony LUT for S-log3 it looks awful. It's crushed and it clips so bad. I also see a lot of banding. I have no clue to as what is going on?

I'm also bugged by the incredible awkvard way of doing things in Avid compare to PP. I guess I've forgot how many steps it takes to do things in Avid. Right now it just feels like an awfully bad NLE to use. Especially when doing colour, titles and effects. It's like I don't want to ever touch the damn thing. To bad I have to because all of the post houses uses Avid.

I love so many things about Avid and its media management tools are second to none. In the mid-late 90s I started off in this game as an Avid engineer then editr, but ever since AMA was introduced and never quite worked properly it has been a massive pain in the arse.

Premiere is by no means perfect, but it simply does so much more so much more problem free than Avid although admittedly I've not tried MC8.

EDIT: At a guess though is it interpreting the ckips as seeing RGB or Video levels?

I spent some time figuring out what was going on and I found out that Avid interprets footage and adds a LUT without asking me. Sure it did select the right S-log3 LUT on some clips but on others the software selected S-log2 when the clip in fact was shot with S-log3.
In Premiere Pro I hardly ever drop resolution when editing but on Avid the default setting appears to be half resolution. I could change that to the green 10-bit mode and all banding went away. But it also made editing sluggish. I see very little if any banding in PP and it's speedy and still okay with 4k files.

When I went from Avid to PP it was a bit of struggle finding out how to best edit and deal with things like graphics and effects. Now when I'm doing the reverse process Avid feels like something from the 90's. Yikes!

hmmmm......I've been editing on Avid for at least 5 years. Before Avid, I worked with PP for a short period of time. The workflow in PP is infuriating. The instability in PP is infuriating. I know these things are very user oriented experiences, but, I just never got the hang of PP. Media Composer version 8.3 is a wonder. It has never failed me; and, I just can't speak highly enough of this app. I have an Adobe Cloud license, but, every time I open PP I cringe. No, for me, Avid is the bomb. I've tried edius, vegas, and FCPX. Media Composer is the only professional app in the bunch. For me, it's that simple. Admittedly, Avid doesn't provide version updates a quickly as other NLE's. But, I've stuck with MC thu it all. v8.3 is just the best there is. The depth of commands can't be beat by any other NLE. Roll and slip edits are a breeze. Again, my only real complaint with MC is the FX package. If they went open source, OFX, on FX, it would be unbeatable.

Which brings up RAO's Stock Answer Number One:

Start in Resolve.

And Resolve is a bit wonky with the LUT depending at which step you apply it. It seems to work best if you apply it to the clip(s) in the Media Pool and not in the timeline. And make sure you do the "Reel names from filename" or whatever the verbage is.

I too think MC 8.3 is quite nice. They not only added the 4k(not just UHD) support but quashed some annoying bugs.

Hope y'all have a good eve,
Robert
