AVID vs. Canon XHA1 24f = WTF?

So, I just recently bought the Canon XHA1 and absolutely LOVE the feel of the camera. Regretfully, the Canon 24f format does not seem to get along with AVID at all. I've been on the AVID forums poking around for an answer, and it seems there is no way to get the TRUE 24f out of the footage. Does anybody know of any work-arounds for this? If not, is anyone interested in buying a Canon XHA1?

Doesn't the XHA1 record to tape? Shouldn't you just need to set your capture setting to 24p, and ingest? It should just capture the footage. They're maybe some setting checked to remove pull-down when capturing 24p from tape, if so find it, and uncheck it. I haven't been on Avid (or any editing platform for that matter) in about 5 years, so I'm not sure.

Im not to sure about AVid, But I imagine it would work just fine with AVi's. You can buy cineform neo, for 130.00. This is a great program, that will convert your canon 24f, to 24p, convert it to an avi, and change the color space to 4;2;2. It's the best way to go as far as capture programs go.

Yeah, I tried this (on Media Composer 4.05) and had Time Code issues as well as glitches throughout the footage. I spoke with AVID and they said MC5.5 did not officially support Canon's 24f. Apparently Final Cut has finally surpassed AVID (it pains me to admit that).

Thanks for the reply.

Wow, I've never heard of Cineform Neo. I'll give this a try and, hopefully if it works, have enough time to take the Cam off e-bay. THANX!

yeah, I have two xha1's that I still enjoy shooting with, I use abobe, but I capture with cineform and import in to adobe. They give a free 7 day full trial. It should definetly work.

I hate to say this, but you obviously did not poke enough. There IS an Avid workflow for 24F. The detriment is that you can't capture timecode. But if you are not going back to the tape, this isn't that much of an issue really. You're just going to have to look more for the correct workflow, but it does exist. If I knew it off the top of my head, I'd gladly tell you. But I don't, so just dig some more for it and you should be able to find it. Good luck.

I had the same problem with this camera back in 2008, but I was able to find the solution in a matter of hours using Google and the Avid Community forums (the internet is your friend). It's a two-step process involving MPEG Streamclip (a free program) and another program (also free, but I forget the name). The thing about the XHA1 is that it was one of the last tape-based prosumer cameras in a world of fast-moving solid state media. I reckon Avid chose to focus on fast solid state workflows instead (which Final Cut is slowly catching up to) instead of devoting their resources to figuring out Canon's ridiculous 24F codec. Just my 2 cents.

When capturing, turn off the TC track in the capture tool window. The camera doesn't properly align the timecode to 24/30 frames correctly which is why the timecode needs to be turned off. The capture process only looks at the flags for 24f capture.
