Avid Video Card

Avid recommends the NVIDIA Quadro®4 980 XGL (Windows) or the NVIDIA QuadroFX 1100 . . . what do I loose if I build a system with an inferior card?

Thanks Mike, so does teh nvida quadro bring the avid up to realtime like matrox would do for premiere . . . ecuse my ignorance?

While we're on the subject . . .

What is the best, most powerful video card that Avid qualifies? And are there any specific video cards on the horizon even more powerful that Avid anticpates qualifying?

I currently have an ATI 9800 XT Pro 256Meg and want to remain at that level of performance or better.

By "performance" I meant whatever my ATI Radeon 9800 XT Pro 256 Meg gives. I don't want to get an Avid-qualified nVidia card that is comparable in performance to an ATI Radeon 8000 series or anything like that. I want the best Avid-qualified grafx card, which I assume is like my ATI or better. But which one is that?

Thanks,

Most of the Avid Qualified NVidias are the Quadro line which is more equatable to ATI's Fire cards. I'm afraid I don't know much about the 9800 XT, but perhaps that comparison will help you find the information you're looking for.

The most expensive Nvidia qualified by Avid is the Quadro FX 1400. I assume that also means it's the best. :)

I swapped out an ATI 9600 Pro for an Nvidia Quadro FX 500. There's not too much of a difference with Xpress Pro. The 3d DVE effects are previewed a lot better than with the ATI, but otherwise it's pretty much the same ... oh, and Marquee works. I always got an error message in Marquee with an ATI card.

Hope that helps.
