AVID user going HDV

I use AVID to edit my DV projects. Now I want to take the step to HDV... but I'm not at all sure my beloved AVID is the right choice when it comes to editing HDV. For one thing, how do you monitor your HD footage? What is the workflow?

I'd like some experienced users to give their thoughts on the subject. Pro and cons?

I'm thinking of buying Adobe Premiere or Canopus Edius. These programs have better HDV support, do they not?

But at the end of the day, I'd be happiest if I could just stay with the AVID interface that I've come to know so well.

Thankful for any feedback!!

Avid Xpress Pro 5.2 and upwards work perfectly well with HDV footage. 5.5 can fix up the MPEG-2 transport streams on export to minimise recompression, though given that you'll normally be color correcting every shot anyway and sensible people wouldn't make their only HD master copy on HDV, that's not such a big benefit. Otherwise it's just like DV editing, only needing far more CPU power to do multi-stream effects.

Monitoring is more complicated. 5.5+ can do full-screen playback of HD footage from the timeline, but it's a bit buggy... sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Hopefully they'll sort that out in the near future.

Oh, one thing I should add: I've read that Xpress Pro can't handle 25fps HDV from the JVC HD100, though it can handle 30fps. I've no idea why Avid haven't included support for that, and can't confirm that it's true as I don't have any HD100 clips to test with.
