If I get the new Media Composer 3.0, can I use non-Avid external storage drives to hold media? I haven't decided yet if I will use a PC or Mac version, or if I want to go to FCP. The external dirve issue may help me decide.
If your OS recognizes it as a drive, Avid will recognize it as a drive and will be able to capture to it (provided the drive is fast enough for the footage you're capturing).
I picked up a G-Raid 2 TB system for under $750 and feed firewire 800. It rocks, massive storage and fast speed. If you go on their website http://www.g-technology.com/products/G-RAID2.cfm there's a chart that tells you how many streams you can do live along with how much these can hold (please note: drive cant be filled 100%- needs headroom). Comes formatted for Mac but only takes 3 minutes to format for PC with included instructions. For reference I use this on my PC MC3.0, best buy I ever made. When my other Avid's drives crap out I am definatley buying another.
Pretty freakin cool from the Drobo website....but a little more $ than the G-raid, but it is expandable...I love my G-raid, but the Drobo is definately worth looking, it seems easy to use.
