Yes, the new support for the REd works on two levels.
On the offline side you use free MetaFuze software to encode Avid DNxHD media from RED R3D files. This media can be loaded into Media Composer without the ALE, Quicktime and other third party app hassles of the past. There are a couple of things to work out but this process already works well.
Then on the finishing side Avid DS can take the Media Composer project with all the layers, effects, etc. and conform it using the R3D files. No need for any third party apps to load the material in.
