Avid Project Settings Help

I've searched the forum threads but haven't come up with what I'm looking for, hopefully someone can help.

I have a project shot in 24p NORMAL

Should I edit this in my Avid Xpress Pro 5.5.1 (no Mojo) using a 30i project or should I use a 23.976 project?

I understand that I could actually use either one.

Why would I choose one over the other?

Thank you.

Depends on what you will ultimatley do with the project. Export to DVD, broadcast, film? 24pN can be edited on a 30i timeline and in most cases should be. Xpress Pro 5.5.1 has the option to remove Normal pulldown which will take you to 24p, just not as cleanly as 24pA footage would be.

If you want DVD and you want it to be a progressive DVD, then you should work in a 23.976 with pulldown removed. If you don't care if it's a progressive DVD, then you can work in 30i with the footage captured straight off the tape.

Broadcast is 30i all the way.

Film is 23.976 with pulldown removed (and again, 24pA would be a more "fluid" workflow).

Hope that helps.

I thought Avid was unable to remove pulldown unless the clip is captured? I have a Firestore and want to record 24P to Avid OMF files since it is easier than doing a Quicktime 24P and importing since Avid has to change the file. Since I know Avid can't remove Advanced Pulldown in the program, what do I do to remove 3:2 pulldown?

Why is Quicktime 24p more difficult than OMF? (Keep in mind I've never worked with a Firestore.)

Avid does not remove pulldown from file, but does so in real time during capture. The ability to do files is part of an upcoming release.
