avid + pro tools

When I was in film school, we used the media 100. It allowed us to pretty much simultaneously cut picture and audio, bouncing between the two really quickly.

From what I've read avid and pro tools can't work simultaneously on the same machine, especially if you want to edit picture and audio at the same time effecting immediate changes in the time line etc...

I know this is a bi product of the old film editing days (on a flatbed etc...) and the processing needs of each program.

1) Do any of you guys/gals no a work around, or a unique way of achieving this style of editing short of buying a media 100?- I might've thought twice about buying one , but, the rumour is it's being phased out/discontinued. -

2) Do you guys/gals lock picture, and then do a full audio edit/mix session?, or do you just keep doing separate passes at each ?

'PPreciate it. Thanx.
