Avid P2 Import Offline Solution

Just wanted to post my experiences with Avid's P2 import clips/media function because documentation on the internet is sparse.

If you use import P2 clips/media on a p2 card, avid consolidates the mxf files, changing the original filename structure. If you have a bin open that was previously full of these consolidated p2 clips and import another p2 card using the p2 clips/media function, your previously consolidated p2 media will go offline.

In order to relink this media, you must go back to your backup of the original p2 card with the appropriate file structure. I didn't have a backup because I didn't want the same p2 files taking up twice as much space (consolidated clips + originals). Posters on avid.com suggested that it would be impossible to relink these clips with the source media with original file structure.

I've found that in order to relink the consolidated files without the originals, you must delete the avid media database files within your mxf/1 (or whatever) folder, thereby losing your logging information. Then within the relink menu, choose the drive that contains the Avid MediaFiles folder where the consolidated files are located and relink. Avid will tell you that the relink has failed but your clips will be mysteriously online again.

Hopefully anyone else that has been burned by offlining p2 files that have been consolidated will find this post helpful. It seems very bizarre to me that avid has not patched this functionality.
