Avid liquid? Avid Express?

I'm a young filmmaker who's looking at buying their first NLE software and have just been doing some research. I was wondering if their are huge differences between Avid Express and Avid liquid? obviously liquid is the cheaper, consumer version, but is liquid still adequete enough for most basic student, short film editing? Would premiere pro 2.0 be better? Because I have been using this at school and am interested in how the two compare. I am looking at heading the premier pro 2 way at the moment, but am very interested in Avid.

Ive been wondering the same thing but forgive my lil knowledge of internet lingo is IMHO a good thing?

Look into Avid's student version if you are still in school. They also have a very good offer if you are graduating this year.

I noticed Avid are offering a very good 'academic' price on Xpress Pro HD, which is persuading me to possibly go with that. But I am yet to build my computer for editing and I am worried that Avid doesn't offer the greatest stability and support if not confirgured exactly, so I am leaning towards possibly going with PPRO 2.0, which is what I've been using at school with no problems.

If you're building a computer, and you want Avid, then why not build it exactly to Avid specs and enjoy the editor you want with the stability you desire?

Just curious.

If PPro works for you, then great, but you seem to be wanting one thing and settling for another.

I know I am not up to par....

I know I am not up to par....

with everyone else as far as expertise goes. I only do event videography part time, but I have had Avid Liquid since before it was even Avid and have found that it is a reliable, full featured NLE with basic DVD authoring built in. It got a bad rap since Pinnacle had it originally, but from what I have read on Avid's forums is they are serious about it and are doing what is needed to make it a player in the NLE arena.

So with all that said, I would not discount it for a beginner into video and editing, as it has done me well for the last 3-4 years.

Just my 2 cents worth!

I am a Mac person and use FCP and Avid, but I would seriouslly look into the Edius Canopus System. It seems to be really good, but I heard it takes a while to get used to.

Liquid is a good system for what it's designed for: An all-in-one software suite. What it's not designed for is a film workflow, or similar 24p stuff (including the DVX). I think that's why it gets discounted a lot around here, because we're all DVX people and to keep a progressive workflow you can't use Liquid.

Beyond that . . .

We have Liquid at an office where I do some work and I can't get that program to do anything useful. It has always been kludgey and unreliable. Now, that's just my experience. You should try to find someone who has Liquid, knows how to use it and is willing to show you.

But in the end, Avid Xpress Pro HD is a great NLE choice.

thanks very much for all the advice guys, I think I will head the Avid Xpress Pro HD way, as I can get it for an academic price and I think it will provide me with a stable, reliable NLE that I can learn on and progress further with.
