Avid Liquid, anyone ever use it?

I went to visit an old client for lunch today and he just recently installed Avid Liquid on his computer. I messed around with it for a while and it felt like the "kids" version of Avid with a much easier to use interface.

I gave him my honest opinion and said that we should stick with Media Composer for his documentary project in July since that's what I used to edit for the previous gig I did for him back in Jan-March.

Anyone else ever use it?

It'd pretty neat, really. I'd never do a real project on it or place a client in the same room with it but it wasn't made for that. Apps like Liquid and Ulead products are great to learn on and outgrow.

Liquid probably has the best and coolest color correction tools of any NLE -- and it has Commotion's Primatte Keyer -- but its limitations are maddening.

A very good colour corrector, we used it on to workstations for 2 years such a fast interface with background rendering, the second you take your hands off the keyboard it was rendering, showed such promise but man oh man you could not predict what that bi*ch would do next, your render would never quite come out the way it looked during the edit. Consitantly having to "FUSE" clips ( the process of rendering some over the filters you have applied to get the result you want ) it hated stacking filters, slowly phased it out into CS3 and FCP, man oh man was it fast tho and never lost any work it remebers every keystroke

I like Liquid

HiI do a lot of editing on Liquid and Liquid Chrome for German tv and dvd's. Liquid is very nice for anything mpg2 and uncompressed. I edit all my new canon 5d mkII footage with it after converting the mov with ffmpeg/avanti gui to 150mbit mpeg2 ibp. As we need 25fps here I transcode mostly directly to 25 fps which looks very nice.
Editing is quick and color corrections are high quality because internally everything is 16bit color.
Background rendering is nice and while searching your next clip Liquid already renders your last color correction or dissolve.
I did several long stories, 45 minutes its a pain on the laptop but okay as long as you have a decent fast HP Workstation
As Liquid lets you choose to do any sizing and 2d 3d with your algorythm of choice like six lobed lanczos or moms etc. one can get extremly good looking fx.
Liquid chrome uses an AJA Xena board for life timeline output and decent life downconversion to SD monitoring.

All in all this software is the best kept secret of NLE !
Avid bought Pinnaclesys two years ago to get rid of its strongest competitor.
Anyhow CNN is still editing with it !

Ciao Matthias:)
