Can the new Avid xpress HD 5xx preview out to an external monitor via firewire and a miniDV ? Id heard that Avid requires a Mojo to connect an external monitor but was wondering if this might have changed in the new version of avid, thanks!!!

I have Avid Xpress Pro 4 for the Mac and use a ADS Pyro A/V link which works with an external moniter...Although it can't handle any effects during playback such as Color Correction, but it displays the frames so I get a realistic image after/during correction.

Are you using that a/v link through a minidv or deck and firewire to computer or are you using a video card connection? thanks

Any version of Avid that I've used is able to do this. There will be the standard firewire delay, and your real-time performance may vary, but you can get the image out.

Going out through the TV port on a video card will work, but it will not be a full resolution image.

Hey thanks for the info krestofire, I am going to go over to my buddies house who just got Avid few week ago and try some stuff out with the external monitor I have, is there a specific way to send the footage to the monitor? or just plug the firewire and s-video to the minidv/monitor and thats it? just wondering exactly how then I get the footage on the monitor from avid, i know my friend's doesnt have a clue.

After you've plugged in the cables, you need to make sure that Avid is sending video out through Firewire. In the Project Window, click to the Settings tab, then double-click on Video Display. In that window there will be a checkbox to "Output to DV Device." Make sure that's checked and you should be good to go.

I don't think the HVX does passthrough, but you might check in the HVX forums to verify that, or hope that someone who has actually touched an HVX chimes in. :)
