Avid (Failed My College Course, I Need Help)

Just received my grades and found out I failed one of My college classes. I'm really having a hard time trying to understand avid especially since I learned on Final Cut Pro.

Any help is greatly appreciated

There's an Avid way of doing things and an FCP way of doing things. Avid is only now catching up to the FCP way of doing things. Keep trying to learn Avid. It's still relevant if you plan to work in places like LA or NY.

If you don't know how to edit on Avid it's because you aren't spending enough time on it. Go get some raw footage and practice.

Not just ny and la.

Here in d.c., discovery has 55 avids and natgeo has 10.

And as far as avid "getting it right", they have made many changes since FCPro came out.

Now if apple would learn about the avid way of media management, we'd talk.

Instead they seem to be going the other way with ifinalcutmovie studio pro x.

Typing from edit suite 35 at Discovery. New upgrades coming in July for all suites including hardware and software. We will make it to version 5.0. We are talking well into six figures for the upgrade. Avid is alive and well and really not that hard to learn. Just gotta stay with it.

Lynda.com has some great media composer tutorials. Also the Avid forums have plenty of video tutorials also. They'll help you get up to speed.

Glue your butt to the seat and edit. That's the ONLY way to learn Avid, Final Cut, or Premier.

And as for Avid finally catching up to Final Cut... I just hope Avid never dumbs down to that level.

Final Cut has been trying to catch up to Avid but it still hasn't. They are different but not better per say. So now they just gone a different route all together with Final Cut X.

Bing! I can only agree.

The best way to learn any software platform is to use it. Reading the manual helps.

And if you're used to using similar software to do the same thing, you need to completely forget everything you know about the other software. Really.

As said before, the only way to learn is to use. However, dont just sit in front of it and try to add a dissolve (or the like) to two random clips....get into a REAL editing situation. NOTHING will teach you like editing an actual project . I have 3 MC's, and make every intern do a real spot or corp video (the easy ones) so that they can learn the software in context of a real job.

The way I learned, twelve years ago at a company I worked at, was I stayed after work and edited with the footage they had. I wasn't an editor then but wanted to learn. Then any questions that came up I either looked it up in the manual or asked another editor. (youtube didn't have any tutorials back then, heck they're weren't any videos posted back then at all.

If I can do it without a lick of an online tutorial you can.

I have been on Avid for 12 years and I have cut professionally on FCP, and Media 100. The key to thriving in different NLEs is to leave your workflow/ methodology at the door. If you bring a FCP mindset to Avid you will be frustrated. Like wise with Avid to FCP. Learn how the program wants YOU to use it and do it that way. Avid has a more rigid approach if you don't fight it you will find that some of its rigidity is there to help prevent you from developing sloppy habits and workflows that are all too easy in more flexible NLEs like FCP. Don't fight it just learn it.

Also get Steve Coen's book Avid Agility. I recommend you buy the Kindle addition. With Kindles new Web based reader you can pull up the book on any computer with an internet connection. You don't need a kindle to read it.http://www.amazon.com/Avid-Agility-Working-Intuitively-Composer/dp/1460985451/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314419984&sr=8-1
