Avid Express pro and Mac Book Pro

I was just minutes away today from ordering the 17in macbook pro laptop bundled with Avid Express pro, when my guy from Promax told me that for some reason Avid was not working with the Mac...He was a little vague on the reason, so could someone shed the light. Is there a fix coming from Avid? or Apple?

Jus have a look on the Tech Specs from the Avid Web site:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/Macintosh

For all systems listed below, the following minimum specifications are required:
  • Mac OS X 10.4.6. Earlier Mac operating systems are no longer being tested or qualified.
Important note: Avid Xpress Pro v5.5 does not work with Mac OS X 10.4.7. Do not upgrade to this version of the OS. Check back to this page for updates on this issue.
  • PowerMac G5 and PowerBook models only. Universal Binaries for Mac Intel will be supported in a future release
  • System memory (same requirements for software-only, with Mojo or with Mojo SDI)
    • 1 GB system minimum
    • 2 GB recommended for HD or high-stream count SD projects
  • A graphics adapter supported by Apple – 128MB memory on graphics card
  • Apple native FireWire, included with all qualified systems
  • 40 GB or larger internal SATA boot drive
  • CD or DVD-ROM drive or DVD+RW drive
  • QuickTime 7.1 or later
As you can see: the actual release of AXPro is not Universal Binary, so it does not make sense to me, trying to work with Xpress Pro on a Mac Book.

Best regards
Jan

The Macbook Pro is an Intel chip, so Xpress Pro WILL NOT run on it. It will not work with bootcamp either, due to the graphics card of the Macbook Pro. It will work with bootcamp on the other Intel systems.

And to add: Avid is working on a Universal Binary for Xpress Pro. No ETA that's solid enough to type. Hopefully soon because as soon as it hits, Macbook Pro here I come. :)

Well.... that's depressing. It's like calling out "Steak" and there's no steak...:(

I figured Avid user were used to that sort of thing by now. I never upgrade anything until Avid tells me it's OK.

The only reason that I would go this route is the fact that their website advertizes this bundle. If Promax knew this, then they should pull that particular bundle. Since I posted this on the Avid thread site, I guess saying I wanted the MBP and FCP instead might get me banned :banned:

There is no "date" but it is directly related to Apple release of their "Mac Pro" desktop systems. Once those are released, Avid will begin work on the Universal Binary Software for Media Composer and Xpress Pro.

10.4.7 will be supported very soon, maybe even before the weekend, but as other have pointed out a UB version will come after Intel Mac desktops arrive.
