I'm having problems with my Avid export footage looking degraded and jittery. I've tried messing with the settings but still have crapy images. I have Avid Pro but not the most recent version.... Do I need mojo to export at the best possible resolution?
There are several variables that we're going to need to help answer your question:
1. Exactly what version of Pro are your running (the last two versions allowed for export with the DV50 codec which will improve quality, the previous versions locked you at DV25).
2. What format are you using to export from Pro? Uncompressed? Compressed?
3. What are your export settings for the aforementioned format?
4. Define "crappy images." I know you said "degraded and jittery" but can you give me more? Does it look compressed? Are you seeing jagged edges on the video?
You should not need Mojo to get a decent export out of Xpress Pro, so with the information requested above hopefully we can find a fix.
Thanks Chris. The version I currently have 4.1.1 - which I am in the process of upgrading on my Mac (awaiting update for OS from Apple) I am hoping this is the problem.
I've tried the below senerios in both a 24 and 30fps projects and both look bad. The images with any movement are jagged/fuzzy. Not to mention the output is brighter with less contrast. Basically it looks nothing like the original- think Hi8 or VHS.
The settings I've tried are QT movie- "same as source" with "DV Codec" then again without "DV codec".
I also tried QT reference with "digital mastering".
FYI - up until this point I've only burned DVD's from my old camera (Sony VX-1000) and it worked great. I'm getting this problem from the DVX-100a. It looks great when I'm editing, just the output is bad. I made some smaller .mov files for the web and they look awsome.
Well, it sounds like you're doing everything right as far as your export proceedures. I seem to remember an old problem with Xpress Pro version 4.3 and lower where the field order was messed up on QT. If you want you can do some searches on the Xpress Pro forum at www.avid.com. That could be causing your problem. Normally QT is the format to use when working with Avid, but you might try exporting an uncompressed AVI file to see if that solves the problem. Either way I would highly recommend upgrading to at least 4.5.1 and 4.6 if that's available on Mac (I'm a PC user myself, and sometimes Avid releases new versions on PC before Mac). Also make sure that your version of Quicktime is up to date.
Lastly, the jagged edges might just be normal interlacing which looks horrid on a PC monitor, but looks great on a TV. If I'm right and it is the old field order issue then that would only make interlacing look worse.
After upgrading post back if it still doesn't look right.
That's the best I've got. Maybe someone else will chime in as well.
Just had another thought. Open one of your exports in QT Player. Under the "Window" menu click "Show Movie Info." This will show various stats about the video file. Make sure that QT is reading it as a 24p file.
I have read on the Avid.com forum site about similar problems like I have. I am hopeful that I just need the upgrade. As far as QT in the MAC version- I click on movie properties and it does not have the fps info.
It has to be an Avid issue since I have the same footage in both a 24 and 30 project and the end result looks the same.
As soon as I get the OS upgrade (hopefully by Monday) I will install version 4.6.1 and post the outcome.
Upgraded to the latest version of Pro 4.6 - the export looks a little better but still is not as crisp as the original. I emailed Avid a few days ago but have not heard back.
i just want to burn a DVD... All this $$ spent on Pro when my Xpress DV worked fine!!!!
Those are interlace artifacts. Are you editing in a progressive project like 23.976p? If not, 24 frame material in a 30i project, or 30i shot material on a progressive monitor will display those artifacts and are expected. They are not noticeable when played back on an interlace NTSC monitor.
I would expect that interlace frame if shooting F5 which I believe is NORMAL pulldown? Either way, ADVANCED or NORMAL will give you that interlace frame.
If it is NORMAL, then even capturing in a 23.976p project will not be correct since Xpress Pro only supports ADVANCE pulldown removal when capturing. Capturing ADVANCED as NORMAL will result in 1 jitter frame every 5 video frames when played.
The sequence edited at 30i should look fine on a NTSC monitor when played back after compression. Are you trying to reverse telecine in Sorenson Squeeze?
Yes- shot at normal pulldown not the advanced setting....
I just want to export the project to DVD and all I get is these fuzzy frames every 4 frames or so. I'm just trying to export either a QT reference or QT movie "same as source" and either way it turns out like this.
So what is the best for compression because iDVD still sends through the problem... Do I have to upgrade to Studio Pro so that it will compress those jittery frames?
The jittery frames will always be there becuase of the pulldown. With NORMAL you will see two frames of jitter while three of them will be clean. It will look like: CLEAN | CLEAN | JITTER | JITTER | CLEAN
Again, with normal MPEG2 processing it should play fine on NTSC monitor. But if you pause the DVD and advance frame by frame, you will see the same as above.
It's only when editing at native 24 and encoding native 24 that this goes away.
Thanks so much for your help. I've played around some more with Sorensen and see what you mean. I am going to upgrade to Studio Pro for many reasons anyway and it does have a better MPEG2 compressor than what I have currently.
By the way- I love your site 24p.com. On many occasions I've used it and it is a valuable resource. In fact, I came across it 6 months ago and it was one of places that helped me decide on purchasing the DVX-100a.
I still have the jittery frames even in a native 24frame export 24 frame project. I have tried Compressor- which comes with DVD Studio Pro to create MPEG2- and I still have the same result.
I tried exactly as you said, and I still have the jittery frame output with Sorenson. It is filmed in F5 mode and edited in 29.97fps. I also tried a 24 project and have the same result.
I would expect it in a 29.97 project, strange that you see it in a 23.976p project. Make sure that the original capture in the timeline was correct. When you export a QT reference from the Avid and step through it in MoviePlayer, do you see the interlace frames or not? You shoudn't. If so, we can backtrack from there.
