Avid, Canon Xl H1, Mac???

Hey guys

I am new to the forum. I was just approved a budget to get a new video editing system plus cameras and machines). The combiniation that has been suggested to me was:

(3) Canon XL H1 HDV cameras
(3) Apple G5 Quad custom systems
(3) focus/Canon Firestore HD for XL H1
software: Avid Studio HD

There are many more items on the order list but I wanted to know about the core items. Anyone have any experience on running Avid Studio HD on the Apple G5 Quad computers? If so, how does it run? Are there any problems with the Apple handling HDV footage?

I am going to max the MAcs by upgrading to 8-1 gig Lifetime Memory RAM chips and MAxtor 500 gig Maxline SATA 7200/16m

The type of films we are producing require High Definition output and the best image quality before going to the CineAlta line of cameras.

I know Avid is the industry standard but does anyone have a updated list of movies/television shows that are edited in Avid?

Thanks for all your help

Ed

The Studio bundles of Avid are only available of PC, no Mac version exists.

Might want to double check, but I think I read somewhere that Avid can only use 2GB of RAM, so if you're wanting 8GB for just Avid, it might be a waste of resources. If you want it for other programs, then that's a different story.

Can I give you the list of stuff NOT cut on Avid? It would be shorter. :) Seriously, on the Hollywood level just about the only things that aren't cut on Avid are Walter Murch projects (he uses Final Cut Pro) and Speilberg's stuff (he still cuts film). Television is a more diverse area, but I'm pretty sure that Avid is still the majority.

Also, Avid doesn't support the H1 yet, so if you'll have to use the SDI out or run the HDV tape through a deck qualified by Avid.

Hope that help.

What he said. What's also really nice about Avid is that if you start something on a lower end Avid (Xpress Pro HD for instance) and find someone who has a really good one (30k Adrenaline or 90k Symphony) you can easily transfer it over to finish on with more options and no compression.

As for the XL H1, the 24f means Avid won't work with it. It does hoever work with the Panasonic HVX200 (in fact it currently is the only program I think that can play the MXF files with no conversion). You could also try the JVC HD100U.
