Avid and XP Pro x64

Hi All, just a word of caution. Avid Xpress won't even install in the new 64 bit version of Windows XP Pro. I founf this out the hard way. Yes, Avid says Use XP Pro with SP2. I figured that newer and bigger might be better. It's not. :(
Have fun,
Mike.

Does that mean you need to run Avid Xpress Pro with XP home edition? It does not work with XP Pro?

I just purchased Avid Xpress Pro (Academic version) and I was planning on trying it out with XP Home Edition but thinking strongly about purchasing XP Pro. And you're saying-- don't do it.

I still have not gotten Avid Xpress to open. The error message is that I'm missing a dac32.dll and I thought maybe that had to do with my running Home Edition instead of Pro. Is it totally unrelated?

Should my next move be
1-download the dll?
2-reinstall Avid?
3-keep with Windows Home Edition?

it will work on XP pro. There is a new 64-bit (regular windows is 32bit) version of windows for 64 bit procesors. i wonder if any video editing software works as i have a 64 bit processor and im running 32 bit windows but my video editing capabilites are amazing. i wonder if 64 bit windows would speed them up even more.

According to Avid, no, Home edition won't work.
Haven't tried it myself though. I just installed XP Professional 32 bit edition.

My *strong* advice is to learn what Avid requires to function based on what Avid specifies. Then follow their guidelines exactly!

Better knock on wood Sean. Eventually it will cause you a problem. Home doesn't have the file permission control that Xpress Pro requires.

XP Pro is more efficient with the file handling, memory management (support 2 gigs of ram instead of 1), support 2 processors instead of 1... And, AVID recommand that operating system, so, the best answer I can say is : follow the AVID specifications.

I'm able to run Xpress Pro HD on a Home Edition, but sometimes, the editing system doesn't work as expected.
