Avid and RED

Hello,

I don't know too much about the actual situation, but is it true that there are some workflow problems with editing RED footage on an Avid system?

I'm a student and I'm considering purchasing an academic version of Avid Media Composer. I'm wondering if it's safe to purchase v3.0 now, or should I wait until they release a later version that will allow smoother interaction with the RED, considering that academic versions aren't eligible for upgrades?

My rule of thumb is if you wait for the next release, you'll always just bee waiting.
especially where Avid is concerned lol
Life is what happens as we are making plans. Hesitation will indeed leave ya behind.

What's the difference between media composer acedemic and the non-acedemic versions?
Or, is there a page that compares the two?

The difference is that you don't get the third-party bundle with Academic (no Boris effects, Avid FX, Sorenson, maybe not AvidDVD, etc...), and you can't use Academic for commercial use--that is, you can't make money with it.

It used to be that you couldn't upgrade it either, but that may have/may be changing. Of course, if an upgrade costs more than $295 you'll do better to just buy it again.

Michael.

Hmm, okay.

Does anyone know if you can upgrade from the academic version to a full version, and how much that would cost? I am in my last year of school, maybe it would be worth it to buy it now, then when i finish upgrade to the full version....? The academic version seems like a pretty good deal...

Last I heard, the upgrade from acedemic to full was $999. When all is said and done, you're still getting the software for about 1/2 the list price.
