Can avid xpress pro hd be used to capture directly from the hvx? the camera is not listed - anyone know?

Good questions, I dlike to know since Avid seem to be the editor of choices on PC. All I used is premiere before, I only got a borrowd copy of avid, and I got no docu about how to use it. I tryed to put 2 video in PiP (one left, and 1 right) and I can't do it. Only 1 of the 2 video in my timeline show ... Anyway I better buy a book before I buy this software for good hehe

That is an interesting question... I've heard people suggest capturing directly into the NLE as DVCProHD via firewire, would like to know that it works for live capture too...

I just found this in the Avid Help file :

Main Topics: Working with HD Media Avid Xpress Pro supports high-definition (HD) media in the following formats:

DVCPRO HD through a 1394 (FireWire) card on your computer

Avid DNxHD resolutions through shared storage

Capturing HD Video and Audio
You can capture DVCPRO HD video through a 1394 board in your computer. This is the only input available when you are working in an HD project.

----
To capture DV 50 or DVCPRO HD media, select 1394.
The 1394 icon displays above the Timeline, and a check mark appears next to IEEE 1394 in the Device menu.

-----
When you capture DV 50 or DVCPRO HD (DV100) media, you can capture directly from a DV camera or deck connected through a separate IEEE-1394 card.

it appears you cannot capture live if you do not have a p2 card loaded (which I dont have yet) cause the deck cant start recording - anyone know a way around this?

There are several way to use P2s on Avid.
1. Just copy them to the "Avid Media Files\MXF\1\" folder. If You want to keep the project separate, you can use "Avid Media Files\MXF\2\" or other figures on the last folder.
2. You can edit direct form the camera, or any other of Panasonics P2 readers. Mount them as a harddisk. I think You have to use Panasonic software to do ti.
3. Use import file.

There may be other alternatives, but these is some. The manual, help file and readme file describes this extensivly.

but the question is can you capture directly to the computer WITHOUT having a p2 card loaded? It seems no.

Anyone know if you can - i cant get it to work

I'm pretty sure you can do that, but you'd have to turn off device control so it knows to just read the live stream.

Have you figured this out?

Hi Smelni- I was just wondering if you discovered if you can record to Avid without a P2 card? Did you try turning off device control like Barry Green suggested?
