Avid and ATI Cards

Wow. This is a bummer. I've been planning to switch to Avid when MC 3.0 is finally released this month. Only to find out that the ATI Radeon HD2400 that is in my 20" iMac isn't compatible? And no ATI cards are? And you can't even add an Nvidia card to an iMac smaller than 24" (which I DON'T want). Is this all correct? Will MC 3.0 not run on my system? Are my options really:

Buy a 24" iMac with Nvidia card (too big for my apartment)
Buy a MacPro (too expensive for my budget)
Continue to use and hate Final Cut Pro?

God Avid - I want to use you - but you are making this very difficult!

Help anyone?

Thanks,
Mark.

I don't follow - I looked at this chart, but the two closest systems to what I have (2.16 GHz or higher Core 2 Duo Intel processor, 20” and 2.0 GHz or higher Core 2 Duo Intel, 17”) both say they are not supported under v. 3.0?

Mark.

That is absolutely insane! I haven't thought about video cards in like eight years since I switched to the Mac...I've never needed too...now Avid is making me double check the specs and drivers - like it's 1998? GAH!

It *might* work, buuuut... if you have a problem, and call Avid, they'll ask for your system specs and then say, "Oh, that's why...". They do call them "qualified" workstations, and not "required" workstations, because these are the setups that they test and find them to provide full functionality. That all said, if you don't follow the list, you could have a machine that, at least as far as editing with Avid goes, is a dud. Unfortunate, but true...

Gah! Absolutely insane that they can't make it agnostic of this kind of stuff. I could understand not being able to run the specialized hardware without the exact video cards/drivers - but the baseline editor? I mean when you disqualify all but the top of the line Mac platforms what are these people going to do - turn to the competition and use FCP - it's the only real option if I don't want to shell out tons of money for a Mac Pro (I hate laptops and would not use a Macbook Pro). I figure I'm just going to buy it anyway and if it doesn't work sell it on eBay - but this is seriously lame. I don't understand their company philosophy. New Thinking indeed. :(

Thats crazy. They are disqualifying systems that are close to 4 years old. Not anything that hasn't come out in the past year.

That doesn't sound right to me - my system is about 4 months old - and from all looks at the Avid support website it looks like it won't be supported.

It's the iMac 20" 2ghz Intel core 2 duo with ATI Radeon HD2400 and 4gb RAM. I just saw a post on the avid.com forums however that the Nvidia reference is for PC only - that if the video card in a mac meets avids specs (I don't know what he meant by this) it should work. Here's hoping.
