Avid acquires Pinnacle!

If I were Avid, I'd grab the best of both products to make a single mega super duper prosumer killer NLE.

I'm still surprised!

Glad I switched from Pinnacle Liquid Edition 6 to Vegas 5 + DVD! Being a Nuendo user, I am also glad that Yamaha bought Steinberg!

Sadly, it does appear to be bad news for LE users.

Liquid Edition is the by far most sophisticated NLE i ever tried (and i played around with basically all but Media100) which allows everything for quick projects by having at the same time an incredible mediamanagement for big projects. i have at the moment a project loaded into mine with 6000+ videoclips and i can find each one of them in 5 seconds in several ways.

the only thing it misses (not for me but for the NTSC world) is the 24p capture and maybe Apple-conformity. so that´s all AVID needs to bring and there you have a superduperkiller NLE IMO.

Had I stayed with the Windows platform (I switched to Mac recently ), Pinnacle LE was next in line for my PC.

Avid is on a rampage lately. Last acquisition was NXN, for their AlienBrain product, a sophisticated asset-management / configuration-management tool.

Avid with background rendering and the Liquid color corrector would be quite formidable indeed.

I wonder if this will mean renewed life for Commotion. One hopes Avid will not continue Pinnacle's mind-boggling and bone-headed neglect for it.

As a Liquid Edition user, I am quite disappointed with this news. I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that Liquid will fall victim to this "merger" since it is in direct competition with XPress Pro.

Personally I have really enjoyed the LE program. It is extremely stable and very easy to work with. The newest version (V.6) has multi-cam editing and other great features. Liquid has a loyal following and I can only tell you that we are all saddened by this whole thing.

Avid is a "legend in their own mind" and I for one won't be joining their parade. I think it is time to switch over to a Mac and Vegas.

in the end, its all about the bottom line with little regard to the end user of these products... thats one less platform out there and less competiton down the road...

i disagree. i think Liquid will be continued and will be enhanced by AVID professionalism. AVID would lose its investment immediately if they mess with Liquid pricewise and featurewise.

they only flatten the competition by implementing an upgrade path like Studio - Liquid Edition - Xpress Edition Pro - Media Composer stages 1-5

what i read the AVID board hopes to get more consumers to stick loyal to their software when turning pro. AVID and Liquid both have strong points and when they are able to combine them in some way while staying competitive with the price then it can only help us to make even better programmes and movies.

Vegas is Windows-only.

Unfortunately this is not the first time Avid has taken this market approach and the last time they did it didn't end well for the company they purchased. They bought a company called Paralax that developed a paint application called Matador and turned it into a product to compete with Discreet's Flame. It took years to "blend" their development efforts and it died a horrible death. :engel017:

Well, it would look to me like Avid is buying patents, branding potential and existing technology more then anything else here. The pinnacle HDV codec alone might have been enough to warrant a strategic merger like this.

I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing Avid branded home editing solutions very soon.
