Avid 5.5 released

Still no AVCHD through AMA? Thought we'd see that with an update.

I thought so too. The AJA support is awesome and AMA playback is said to be beefed up. I will get this for sure.

I've been using edius lately. Missing Avid CC tool though but I need RT AVCHD etc to win me back. That and the ability to use mix formats without having to create a project for each format then import those bins into the main project.

still no love for AVCHD?
damn
(i think they categorize it as unprofessional consumer codec so it stays out at the moment)

AVCHD is a tough cookie. Even Premiere CS5 has some difficulty with it I hear. But, AMA is just a way to ACCESS the footage so you can transcode it, IMHO. Trying to edit RED or Canon 5D or ProRes via AMA can get sloggy. Even on beefy machines. Avid runs best when things are MXF...

Love the fact that I can now capture with a $1000 box.

Apparently not. I put out a call for some info on this timecode thing, and got back screenshots that show FCP's Log & TRansfer recognizing timecode, and here's a screenshot of Avid Media Composer 5.0.3 showing timecode on an AVCHD clip in the bin.
Media Composer 5.0.3Timecode AG-AF100.jpg

And, as mentioned before, Premiere CS5 will recognize the timecode if you import through the Media Browser.

So they all can support timecode. I don't know exactly how they got the AVCHD clip into MC5.0.3, but ... there it is, with timecode...

I kind of feel like that's one of those things that are a hassle up front but is ultimately helpful when things get really big and unwieldy.

This makes me wonder what Avid's NAB announcement will be? I'm assuming not an MC version 6, but what do I know, LOL.

Leaked Press release shows AVID to release the Editizer Plugin at NAB 2011.

Editizer will edit your footage for you following preset templates. Currently offered are Cheesy Romantic Comedy, Aging Actor Action Flick, Soap Opera, Horror (Nicknamed the Sawz effect) and various Reality Show presets. AVID's new head of Marketing stated, "CPU processors are not quite up to Dramas, Thrillers or any other format requiring the audience to think as of yet, but with new CPU's expected down the pipe we think this will only be a year or two in the future." An optional Wedding Video preset will be released by year end.

CS5 actually handles all major formats natively and quite fluidly, so long as you have sufficient hardware. (i7 920 or better.) That includes AVCHD, RED, DSLR, etc. No transcoding, no waiting. Just import and edit.
