AVID 3.5 Released

I have 2 MC's one under an assurance contract, the other is not (both previously at 3.1.2). After installing 3.5 I am thoroughly underwhelmed. We are a P2 house, and never get any of Sony's formats, so for me there's no advantage. There are a few nice fixes with the upgrade. Changing audio import levels, is nice, but not earth shaking.

The README file that comes with the install suggests you look in help (assuming Avid help) for more information on many of the ‘upgrades’. For instance:

"See "Relinking Media Files" in the help."-- taken directly from the README

Literally, not one of the suggestions they list appears in the F1 help menu when you type them in, after the upgrade. How they expect us to learn about these features is beyond me. For $295, seems like they would have had their act together on that. Ill save the money on my other MC until someone can show me an advantage of upgrading.

-- thanks for letting me rant.

It seems like the best new feature is the ability to edit and display 3d. I can't wait to try it.

I have no need for it, but I am pretty impressed that they included 3D editing in the release. Nice to know that I can have that for $300 should the need arise.

Still, until I can remove Advanced pulldown from 1080 24pA files from a P2 card the Avid icon on my applications bar is sadly underused.

So it is $295 to upgrade from v3.1.1? I downloaded the new v3.5 from their the Avid website but haven't installed it yet. Since Avid has killed the dongle (yay!) with this release, I imagine there is some kind of online activation of the software. At exactly which point do they make you whip out the credit card? :)

I'll probably install it soon, though as a heavy P2 user, I'm a little disappointed to hear that not much has changed in that regard.

A big HELLS YEAH to that! Avid really needs to include this feature like yesterday. :(

was hoping for AVCHD editing =)))) with out transcoding!!

That would also be very welcome.

They killed the dongle? I missed that announcement. Good for them. Long overdue. Now, about that pulldown. :)

My guess is that its on their list somewhere ... but I would think that the more requests that they see for these things on their own user boards and/or on Avid-L the sooner we might see it. They say they are listening to us these days ... so speak up where you can be heard or you might as well be talking to the wind.

:)

You can continue to use the dongle, but when Media Composer 4.0 is released it's supposed to go away. When you install the 3.5 software and fire it up for the first time you can choose whether you use their online activation feature and no longer use your dongle, continue to use your dongle, or run the software for 14 days as a trial (fully functioning).

Personally, I prefer the dongle and hope they change their minds when they deliver MC4.0. I'd much prefer to have the option to go with online activation or keep my dongle.

Thanks for the friendly advice, but I've had many conversation with Avid employees about file based pulldown for 1080 clips from P2. It's been on their list for about 6 versions now, going back to Xpress Pro.

Talked to an Avid rep at a show in Oslo a few weeks ago, and from his corporate speaking you could draw the conclusion that it's coming, but when...

One issue is that its extremely heavy to edit the avchd codec without transcoding, but any certified HP/MAC system for avid from the last two years should be capable of editing avchd. I think one problem is that "nobody" in the pro world uses avchd, the avc intra did see a fast implementation since its professional and amongst others BBC pushed on to get the support.

Since I need to be able to edit both Xdcam EX and P2 the media access is great and the ability to run Pro Tools on the same system, hopefully with proper integration. The only issue I have with avid are their stupid hardware pricing....I was quoted 8200$ local here in Norway for Mojo DX!!! +vat

When they can wait a few months so that we have to pay another $295 for the upgrade.
