This is more than likely a hardware issue like:

Unsupported audio card
Audio IO or attached webcam that is hogging the audio resources.

This is fairly well documented on www.avid.com/forums

Unsupported Audio Card no doubt.

I use an external SoundBlaster (via USB) and it is combatible with Avid. Never have had a problem with it. My sound card built into my very good workstation motherboard is NOT compatible with Avid, so I have to use the external SoundBlaster.

I purchased Avid v3.0 a month ago. After many attempts to install, and uninstall, and start over, I still cannot get it to work. I'm running on a Gateway GT 5662 with Vista Home Prem. Is my problem the version of Vista. I'm pretty sure the hardware is supported.

Yeah, this is usually because of unsupported audio hardware. Throw in something like a Soundblaster Audigy 2 and you might have better luck.

Yeah....Avid software is VERY picky about what hardware it works with. Which is why it is such a solid editing system. You must follow the hardware guidelines to a "T" if you want a stable working system. Since PCs are hobbled together with any collection of hardware, it can be difficult to get them to work right...unless you get systems they recommend (HP systems mainly).

This is why I prefer Macs for this....Macs use only specific hardware that will work, and Avid designs around that hardware. More expensive, yes. But not when compared to a certified PC that Avid likes.
