Avid 24P timelines (or 23.976)

Forgive me for re-hashing a tired question...but I continue to be a bit confused. I shot in 24P Advanced. Captured and edited with Advanced pulldown on a 23.976 timeline. I notice there is a 24P timeline option. Was I correct in editing on the 23.976 timeline? And if so, when I create titles in After Effects, I guess I better ensure that they are at 23.976 too (and not "true 24 fps"), right?

You are correct in editing on a 23.976 timeline. The 24p timeline is for a specific film workflow with audio recorded at a specific kHz which is not the DVX.

In AE it's pretty easy to set up 23.976, but in my experience even if you make 24 fps AE files you'll never notice the .024 difference.

Thanks to Krestofre as always. Damn he knows his Avid.

Now I'm trying to learn After Effects...a whole new set of challenges. The titling in Avid is just not very good quality. I read that it was only ever meant to provide "placeholder" versions of titles (unlike Final Cut that allows you to make good quality titles within the same application). I loooove Avid...but I wish they'd include an effective titling function.

What version of Xpress Pro are you on again? The old title tool wasn't worth much, but when Avid packaged the Marquee tool with Xpress Pro we got a quite advanced titler IMO. It's not After Effects, but I've used Marquee for a lot of stuff.

I'm on Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.0. It does have the Marquee tool...though I've never used it. Sounds like it's worth reading up on then!

But speaking of After Effects and Avid...what do you guys think is the best way to export a clip from a 23.976 Avid project into After Effects and back out to Avid again.

I could export an AVI file with Avid codec, etc. Or is the Quicktime Reference file still the best way to go?

Image sequence. Tiff / TGA.

I would have previously said QT Ref, but in this thread:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=51794

MichaelP taught me that image sequences come out of Avid in 4:2:2 instead of 4:1:1 that DV is. That will help you out in AE.

To come back to Avid you can do another image sequence, or a Quicktime Animation to keep it uncompressed.
